We had a beautiful quiet room overlooking the gardens. Breakfast was good - items such as eggs and tomatoes were fresh cooked and hot; meat products were sometimes lukewarm. Service was good. Just a bit disappointed that there was no availability of meals/dinner in the evening- a light lunch was available until 6pm. Would help residents to know this beforehand but that might put off people booking. Monday night was difficult with most eateries closed and we could only find a run of the mill Wetherspoons.

Tap and pay doesn't work. No problem with the system apparently. Taxi driver told us it is a signal blackspot. Water from room taps is nonpotable. Single bottle of water provided for two people for hot drinks and cold drinks - make your choice. Two main staff - one smiling and helpful. One clearly views you as an inconvenience. Not much choice locally but think carefully.

One night stay in this historic house now being used as a hotel located a short walking distance from Hawick centre set in an attractive garden with a wonderful park nearby. Lovely interior with large attractive lounge, entrance hallway and staircase. Large bedroom and en suite bathroom. The Large king-size bed was firm and therefore not that comfortable. Breakfast was a standard traditional option with cereal and juices. Not much interaction with staff except at check in and ordering breakfast. Short and to the point. Free car parking immediately outside hotel front entrance. I would recommend the hotel for a short stay purely for the novelty factor.

Breakfast was top notch, well cooked, well presented and plentiful. Could not fault it. The room (7) was well presented, clean, tidy and comfortable. On the down side it was extremely hot and a blocked overflow drain kept us awake most of our first night. However, there was no issues and once we had pointed out that the overflow was a problem we were promptly oved to another room. The heating in the initial room was stifling but it should be noted that we visited in January and the outside temps were sitting around 0 degrees C what was too hot for us may well have been perfect for others. Staff were exceptional and we made friends with the owners wee dog. All in all Balcary is a great place to stay and I would very much recommend it.

We arrived very late in the evening about 9:30pm and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming or more helpful. They recommended a local takeaway that delivered and allowed us to eat our food in the bar and have a drink. Our room was huge and very comfortable. We’ll definitely be back.

House and location are excellent. The property has been thoughtfully restored and the decor matches its fine Victorian grandeur perfectly. Catering is limited and of poor quality. Fixtures and fittings are low grade and poorly maintained. It is inexpensive.

We stayed here the night before I had a race, the staff were so friendly and accommodating. We arrived later due to traffic and a road closure, so missed ordering food, however we were recommended some restaurants that were dog friendly and local takeaways that we order to the room. We had one of our dogs staying with us, we were advised there was a little paddock at the front of the gardens that's was secure for him to play in. My partner returned to the hotel after dropping me in the morning and had a lovely breakfast with our dog. The room was immaculate and smelled amazing, however they cleaned it was the best smelling room Ive staying in. As for the reviews saying "the place smelled of dog" absolutel nonsense. I've stayed in non pet friendly hotels which were no where near as lovely and fresh as this one. Only negative is I wished we'd stayed longer and will definitely be back.

We have stayed in hotels before that are dog friendly but never had that overwhelming smell. Room was ok. Nothing soecial.
