I really like the room. It is separated into different buildings and has good proportions. The bedroom is wide, comfortable, and clean. The bathroom is also wide and airy. There are no mosquitoes at night. The garden view room is a bit far to walk. Breakfast focuses on Thai food, some of it is delicious. When I went, there was no salad bar. I'm not sure if it's normal. The staff provided good service and advice. There are boats and boards for rent for 150 baht per hour. There is a bar by the sea to sit and chill. The food prices are more expensive than outside. It's the normal price for a general hotel. There are motorbikes for rent for 300 per day. Overall, I give it 8.9/10.

Discovering Trat: Thailand's Coastal Charm Beyond the Usual Path

Trat province offers a distinct allure for international travellers seeking an authentic slice of Thailand, moving beyond the well-trodden tourist trails. Its appeal lies in a captivating blend of pristine natural beauty, including numerous islands and untouched coastlines, coupled with a rich cultural heritage that remains largely preserved. Unlike the bustling metropolises or heavily commercialized beach resorts, Trat provides a more tranquil and immersive experience, allowing visitors to connect with local life and landscapes at a more relaxed pace. This easternmost province of Thailand is a gateway to a different kind of Thai adventure, one that prioritizes natural exploration and genuine cultural encounters. The geographical diversity within Trat is a significant draw, presenting a spectrum of experiences that cater to varied preferences. From the lively shores of White Sand Beach to the serene waters of Klong Prao Beach, and the more secluded islands like Koh Mak and Koh Kut, each area offers a unique atmosphere. The mainland district of Mueang Trat, with its historical sites and local markets, provides a contrast to the island paradises. This varied landscape means that where you choose to base yourself – whether it’s the popular island hubs or the quieter mainland coastal towns like Laem Klat – profoundly shapes your entire journey. For international visitors, Trat presents exceptional value, underscored by its accessible starting price of USD 4.91 per night and an impressive overall review score of 8.5 from over 49,000 guests. This indicates a destination that offers high satisfaction levels without the premium price tags often associated with popular Thai locales. For travellers from the United States and Europe, this translates to more affordable extended stays or the ability to allocate budget towards unique experiences and activities. Indian travellers, often seeking family-friendly options and good value, will find Trat particularly appealing for its diverse accommodation and dining choices. The accommodation landscape in Trat mirrors its diverse appeal, ranging from luxurious resorts to charming, budget-friendly guesthouses. Properties like The Emerald Cove Koh Chang exemplify the higher end, offering sophisticated amenities and service that rival international standards, while Sang Aroon Bungalow on White Sand Beach provides a more intimate and affordable glimpse into island living. These distinct options, available through platforms like Traveloka, allow travellers to tailor their stay precisely to their expectations and budget, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable visit regardless of their origin. You can easily book hotel options that fit your needs. Trat is particularly well-suited for a range of international travellers. For those from the United States, it offers an escape into nature and adventure, with opportunities for diving, trekking, and exploring less-visited islands. European travellers, often valuing cultural immersion and historical context, will appreciate Trat's heritage sites and the chance to experience local Thai life away from mass tourism. Indian families will find Trat a welcoming destination with a good balance of relaxation, activities, and affordability. Travellers from African nations, particularly those seeking regional connectivity or unique Southeast Asian experiences, can find Trat to be an accessible and rewarding destination within the broader Asian travel circuit.

Best Areas to Stay in Trat

Trat province is a mosaic of distinct coastal and island communities, each offering a unique flavour and atmosphere for international visitors. Choosing the right neighbourhood is crucial for shaping your experience, whether you prioritize vibrant beach life, tranquil seclusion, or cultural exploration. From the bustling shores of Koh Chang's popular beaches to the serene waters of Koh Kood and the mainland's charming towns, understanding these areas will help you find your perfect base.

White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao), Koh Chang

White Sand Beach is often the first introduction to Koh Chang for many international visitors, and for good reason. It offers a lively atmosphere with a wide array of restaurants, bars, and shops lining the main road, creating a vibrant energy that appeals to travellers seeking convenience and entertainment. This area is particularly popular with younger travellers and those from Europe and the United States looking for a classic beach resort experience with plenty of amenities readily available, all within easy reach of the island's main ferry terminals.

This stretch of coastline is dotted with numerous hotels and bungalows, from budget-friendly guesthouses to more established resorts, ensuring options for various price points. Visitors can enjoy water sports, explore nearby viewpoints, or simply relax on the sand. The proximity to ferry services makes onward travel straightforward, and the abundance of dining options means you can easily sample local Thai cuisine or international fare. For those wanting to explore further afield, it's a good starting point to book attractions and tours.

Klong Prao Beach, Koh Chang

Klong Prao Beach offers a more relaxed and family-friendly ambiance compared to its northern neighbour, White Sand Beach. It's characterized by a long, beautiful stretch of sand, calm waters ideal for swimming, and a more laid-back vibe. This area attracts a mix of international travellers, including families from India and couples from Europe and the US who appreciate its tranquil setting without sacrificing access to amenities. The presence of mangrove forests and a local village adds a touch of local flavour.

Accommodation here ranges from comfortable mid-range resorts to more secluded villas, many offering direct beach access. Beyond the beach, visitors can explore the nearby Klong Plu Waterfall, enjoy kayaking through the mangroves, or visit the local fishing village. The area is well-served by restaurants and small shops, providing a good balance of relaxation and activity. Its relative calm makes it a favoured spot for those seeking a peaceful retreat after arriving via Trat Airport (TDX).

Kai Bae Beach, Koh Chang

Kai Bae Beach strikes a balance between the liveliness of White Sand Beach and the serenity of Klong Prao, making it a popular choice for a diverse range of international visitors. It's known for its stunning sunsets, rocky outcrops that create interesting tidal pools, and a slightly more bohemian atmosphere. This area appeals to independent travellers, couples, and backpackers from Europe and the US who enjoy a good selection of restaurants, bars, and shops, along with opportunities for diving and snorkelling excursions.

The accommodation here includes a variety of guesthouses, bungalows, and resorts, often with sea views. Kai Bae is a hub for island hopping tours, diving trips, and other water-based activities, serving as an excellent base for exploration. Its elevated position offers panoramic vistas, and the beach itself is a great spot for watching the sun dip below the horizon. The accessibility from Trat Airport (TDX) is reasonable, making it a convenient, yet still somewhat off-the-beaten-path, destination.

Ao Pra, Koh Mak

Koh Mak, and specifically the Ao Pra area, represents a more tranquil and eco-conscious side of the Trat archipelago, appealing to travellers seeking a genuine escape from the crowds. This island is known for its laid-back atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and commitment to sustainable tourism. It's an ideal destination for couples and solo travellers from Europe and the US who value nature, quiet relaxation, and a slower pace of life, offering a stark contrast to the busier parts of Koh Chang.

Accommodation on Koh Mak tends towards charming bungalows and eco-resorts, emphasizing harmony with the natural surroundings. Visitors can enjoy cycling around the island, exploring its numerous small coves, snorkelling in clear waters, or simply unwinding on its pristine beaches. The island offers a selection of local restaurants and cafes, focusing on fresh, regional ingredients. Getting to Koh Mak involves a ferry from the mainland, a journey that itself is part of the adventure, and it's a destination that rewards those who seek a more secluded island experience.

Laem Klat, Mueang Trat

Laem Klat is a coastal district on the mainland of Trat province, offering a glimpse into local Thai life away from the island crowds. It's characterized by its fishing villages, mangrove forests, and a more authentic, less tourist-centric atmosphere. This area is best suited for travellers from all source markets, including India and Africa, who are interested in experiencing the real Thailand, exploring local culture, and enjoying fresh seafood in a genuine setting. It provides a different perspective on the Trat region.

Accommodation in Laem Klat tends to be simpler, focusing on guesthouses and smaller resorts that offer a local flavour. The main attractions here are the natural environment, including opportunities for birdwatching and exploring the coastline, and the chance to interact with local communities. Dining is focused on fresh seafood caught daily. Its proximity to Trat Airport (TDX) makes it a convenient stop for those arriving or departing, and it serves as a gateway to understanding the mainland's contribution to the province's charm.

Klong Son, Koh Chang

Klong Son is situated on the northern part of Koh Chang, offering a more secluded and upscale experience compared to the main tourist beaches. It's known for its beautiful bay, lush surroundings, and a sense of exclusivity, making it attractive to travellers from the US and Europe seeking a more private and serene island getaway. The area is less developed, providing a peaceful retreat with stunning natural scenery and a more refined atmosphere.

Accommodation in Klong Son often includes higher-end resorts and private villas, catering to those who prioritize comfort and tranquility. The bay itself is ideal for swimming and water activities in a calm environment. While it offers a quieter experience, it's still within reasonable driving distance of the island's more active areas, providing a good balance. Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty, explore nearby viewpoints, and experience a more tranquil side of Koh Chang, away from the main tourist hubs.

Hat Ban Bao, Koh Kut

Hat Ban Bao on Koh Kut is a charming area that embodies the tranquil, unspoiled beauty for which Koh Kut is renowned. It's a destination for travellers seeking pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a profound sense of peace. This locale is particularly appealing to couples and independent travellers from Europe and the US who are looking for an idyllic island escape, far removed from the hustle and bustle of more developed tourist spots, offering a truly serene tropical experience.

Accommodation here ranges from simple beachfront bungalows to more comfortable resorts, all designed to blend with the natural environment. The beaches are spectacular, perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and simply relaxing. Koh Kut itself is known for its waterfalls and lush jungle interior, offering opportunities for gentle exploration. What to Eat and Where to Find It in Trat

Trat's culinary landscape is a delightful exploration of fresh seafood, local produce, and distinct Thai flavours, offering a unique gastronomic journey for international visitors. The province is particularly renowned for its seafood, with dishes like "Gai Pad Med Mamuang" (stir-fried chicken with cashews) and "Pla Nueng Manao" (steamed fish with lime) being local favourites, showcasing the region's access to the freshest catches. Beyond seafood, the local "Khao Pad Sapparot" (pineapple fried rice) offers a sweet and savoury delight, and for those seeking something truly local, "Moo Cha-Moo" (a type of grilled pork) is a must-try, reflecting the simple yet flavourful approach to Thai cooking found here. When it comes to dining locations, the bustling markets and beachfront areas of Koh Chang's popular beaches, such as White Sand Beach and Klong Prao Beach, offer a wide array of choices, from casual street food stalls to more established restaurants. For a more authentic experience, exploring the mainland town of Mueang Trat, particularly its local markets, provides an opportunity to sample a variety of regional specialties and interact with local vendors. Muslim travellers can find Halal-certified eateries or dishes prepared with Halal ingredients in larger towns and tourist areas, though it's always advisable to inquire about preparation methods. The price range for dining in Trat offers excellent value for international travellers. Street food and local eateries can provide a delicious meal for as little as USD 2-5, making it incredibly budget-friendly for visitors from India and Africa. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between USD 8-15 per person for a full meal, offering a comfortable dining experience for travellers from Europe and the US. Upscale dining, often found in resorts, can range from USD 20-40 or more, providing options for those seeking a more luxurious culinary experience without the exorbitant prices found in major international cities. Practical dining tips for Trat include understanding that meal times are generally similar to Western schedules, though locals may eat at various times throughout the day. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 10% or a few USD) being customary in tourist-oriented establishments. When ordering, be polite and patient; learning a few basic Thai phrases can go a long way. It's also common for dishes to be served family-style, so sharing is encouraged. Be mindful of spice levels, and don't hesitate to ask for "mai phet" (not spicy).

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Trat

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Trat. The Thai concept of "sanuk" (fun) permeates daily life, encouraging a lighthearted and friendly approach. It's customary to show respect for elders and those in positions of authority. When visiting temples or religious sites, dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. The head is considered sacred, so avoid touching people's heads, and feet are considered the lowest part of the body, so do not point them at people or religious icons. When visiting popular spots like Klong Prao Beach or the vicinity of Trat Airport (TDX), maintaining a respectful demeanour is appreciated. While beaches are generally relaxed, overly revealing swimwear might be frowned upon away from the immediate shoreline. Photography of individuals, especially monks, should always be done with permission. In public spaces, maintain a calm demeanour; loud or aggressive behaviour is considered highly inappropriate. Queueing is not always strictly observed, so patience is often required. Safety in Trat is generally high, but standard precautions apply. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or tourist areas. For transportation, while taxis and tuk-tuks are common, agree on a fare before starting your journey or ensure the meter is used. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are available and offer transparent pricing, which can be reassuring for travellers from the US and Europe. Useful offline apps for navigation and translation can be downloaded before arrival, ensuring you can find your way and communicate effectively. In case of emergencies, the general tourist police number in Thailand is 1155. For medical emergencies, dial 1669. The nearest embassies for key source markets are typically located in Bangkok, but it's wise to have their contact details readily available. For US citizens, the US Embassy in Bangkok can be contacted; for UK citizens, the British Embassy; for Indian citizens, the Indian Embassy; and for various African nations, their respective embassies in Bangkok. Travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen medical expenses or incidents.

Getting to Trat and Getting Around

Reaching Trat from major international hubs requires careful planning, with most travellers flying into Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) before connecting to Trat Airport (TDX) or taking a bus. For travellers from the United States (e.g., JFK, LAX), flights to Bangkok typically involve one stop and a total journey time of 18-24 hours. European travellers from London Heathrow (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA), Amsterdam (AMS), or Paris (CDG) can expect similar flight durations, often with one layover. Indian travellers from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), or Bengaluru (BLR) will find direct or one-stop flights to Bangkok, with journey times around 4-8 hours. For travellers from African cities like Nairobi (NBO), Lagos (LOS), or Johannesburg (JNB), flights to Bangkok usually involve at least one stop and can range from 10-20 hours. From Bangkok, a short domestic book flight to Trat Airport (TDX) takes about an hour, or a bus journey takes approximately 4-5 hours. Once in Trat, getting around the province, especially between the mainland and the islands, involves a combination of transport options. On Koh Chang and other islands, songthaews (shared pick-up trucks) are a common and affordable way to travel between beaches and villages, with fares typically ranging from USD 1-3. Taxis are also available, particularly for longer distances or private transfers. On the mainland, local buses connect towns, and motorbike taxis offer quick, albeit sometimes adventurous, rides. Renting a scooter is popular for independent exploration, but international travellers should ensure they have the appropriate license and insurance. The best time to visit Trat is generally during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is sunny and pleasant, with lower humidity. This period is ideal for beach activities, island hopping, and exploring the natural landscapes. Hotel prices tend to be higher during the peak months of December and January, coinciding with Christmas and New Year holidays, which are significant travel periods for US and European travellers. The shoulder months of November and April offer a good balance of favourable weather and fewer crowds. The rainy season, from May to October, sees fewer tourists and lower prices, but expect intermittent downpours. Before departing for Trat, ensure you have the local currency, Thai Baht (THB). While USD is accepted in some tourist establishments, it's best to use Baht for most transactions, especially at local markets and smaller vendors. SIM cards with data plans are readily available at Trat Airport (TDX) and in major towns, offering affordable connectivity. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, Google Translate for communication, and Grab for ride-hailing. Beyond your passport, ensure you have copies of your hotel bookings and onward travel plans, as these may be requested by immigration officials.

Visa Information

For travellers planning to visit Thailand to experience Trat, visa requirements vary significantly by nationality. US passport holders can typically enter Thailand visa-free for tourism purposes for up to 30 days when arriving by air, or 45 days if arriving by air between November 2023 and May 2024, with the possibility of extension. European passport holders from countries like the UK, Germany, and France also benefit from visa-free entry for similar durations, usually 30 days by air, with extensions available. Indian passport holders are generally granted visa-free entry for 30 days when arriving by air, though it's crucial to verify current bilateral agreements as policies can change. For travellers from African nations, visa requirements are often more stringent. For example, Nigerian passport holders typically require a visa obtained in advance from a Thai embassy or consulate, though specific visa-on-arrival policies can sometimes apply for certain nationalities or under specific conditions, so verification is essential. Kenyan and South African passport holders may also require a visa in advance, or could be eligible for a visa-on-arrival depending on current regulations. It is imperative for all travellers, especially those from Africa, to confirm the exact visa requirements for their specific nationality well before their travel dates. While visa-free entry is common for many nationalities, policies are subject to change, and it is strongly recommended that all international visitors verify the latest visa regulations with the official Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in their home country or the nearest one to them. Proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket, and sufficient funds for your stay may be required upon entry. Confirming your visa status and entry requirements before booking your book flight is a prudent step to ensure a smooth journey to Trat.
