Just before we arrived, I received a message to say the pool & spa were being refurbished, this was disappointing as it's the reason we booked over other hotels, but these things happen. On arrival we were told that there was a wedding and they were very busy with those guests. The room wasn't the cleanest, with cobwebs on the lamp & light fittings and one looked half hanging off, and I felt unable to request a fan after basically being told the wedding was their priority. We had paid half board so went off to dinner where there were tables with half eaten food around us and cupboard doors hanging open, to then be told, the meal I'd ordered had just run out.......on a menu of about 6 items. It was at this point, my husband jumped online and booked us in at IHG Holiday Inn Express Portsmouth and we checked out, not even being asked why.

The staff were excellent as was the breakfast. The gardens were lovely. The room was so hot we had to have the small fan that was provided, on all night. The curtains were thin so the light came in as soon as it was light !

Staff were lovely, very helpful, we were late for breakfast but they didn’t mind. Unfortunately the pool and spa were not open for our stay, however breakfast on the patio was glorious

One night stay for a family wedding that was held on site, the room was clean and very comfortable, the food provided for the wedding breakfast was well cooked and very good. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The building is a converted old country house and as such is a little tatty around the edges but this just adds to the charm.

The room was spotlessly clean on arrival and fresh smelling. The common areas were clean and well decorated.Strangely although there were 4 containers of shower gel, shampoo etc. there was no hand soap. As we were only staying one night we managed to get around this. The grounds were lovely but the outside of the back of the building has paint peeling. We had lunch which was decent and a good value. A couple of negative points. The pool and spa are closed until further notice. We were advised of this before our stay with a note saying that the pool and spa are complimentary elements so no refund or reduction is possible. Surely a hotel with Spa in it's name has this as central to the experience not a free extra? This didn't affect us personally as we didn't have time but is worth others being aware of if booking. We arrived back from an event about 11.15pm and would have liked a drink from the bar and some nibbles but were told by the person on reception that the bar closes at 11pm. With big events on locally it be good if it stayed open a bit later.Breakfast the next morning was very good with plenty of options available.

Hotel is no where near where it is stated . Staff checked our luggage till 3pm. They only had one other guest staying at the hotel and our room was clearly ready however, they made us wait until after 3pm to check in. The lounge they said we could wait in had a few of their employees spread out all over the room and at 3pm when we walked from the tiny table we were waiting. The only other guest walked right in the front door and they took their registration before us. In addition, they gave us the wrong room type that we booked. They corrected quickly as like I said, we were one of two other guest in entire hotel. The spa, pool and all amenities were closed for repair.

The staff were very helpful and kind. Special thanks to the morning breakfast host. She made her a special latte because she wasn’t feeling well.

Very traditional building. Old but well maintained and presented. The location is very secluded and peaceful. Staff are very friendly and attentive. Food quality is outstanding and reasonably priced for a city spa hotel. Compared to the Holiday Inn nearby this place is definitely a step up and we would opt to stay here again.

Perfect place for an overnight stay when working in Southampton Area, single rooms are small but perfectly acceptable, like the fact that there is plenty of parking

Our room was clean, warm and well-lit. We had selected a superior twin, but the view from the room was dreadful ! We were next to the boiler and there was ducting all over, rubbish and the exterior of the building at the back is very shabby. Just to note - there are no usb sockets in the room, so you need to bring your own adapter. There is also no phone - I suppose because everyone has their own these days. The furniture was all dark wood, which is fitting for the age and style of the building, but there were no coasters or mats for hot drinks, which was worrying for putting a mug on the bedside table. We had to use magazines. There was only one comfy chair. The room service was a bit below par - no spare toilet roll, glasses were not washed and beds were not made. Breakfast was good, choice of food was good and service was good. Tables and cutlery etc were all clean and tidy. We had one evening meal in the restaurant, which we booked prior with reception. I had a confirmation email, but the time was totally wrong, so I had to go and tell them. They said, not to worry, they would inform chef what time we would actually be dining. When we arrived at the restaurant, they had no record of our booking. Service was chaos, in spite of there only being three couples dining. Fist choice of food was unavailable, and we waited 45 mins for mains. No-one returned to ask us if the meal was okay, which it wasn't. No-one asked if we wanted desert, so we left.

Stayed 3 weeks in a row, week three I was put in room 60. Very uncomfortable bed, had an odd smell in the room. Shame as the previous two rooms were perfectly lovely.

Well the hotel is pleasant and characterful. The heating was stuck on in the room with only a small window to open. Unbearable poor nights sleep. On complaining nothing could be done apparently so we were moved to another room. Which was much better.
