What an exceptional spot! Marvao is incredible. The pousada is in a perfect location, and overlooking the plains below, it has a fabulous view. Our room, although small, was quite commodious and had historic traditional Portuguese furniture. Our dinner and breakfast were most enjoyable, although the dinner was not “gourmet”. Would we stay there again? Absolutely.

Stunning location and staff couldn't have been more helpful. Had some problems finding it as signs to Pousada were poor, and no directions available. Parking is limited at hotel, although there is sufficient within walking distance. Steep slopes and steps to hotel itself, with no vehicle access, so you will need to carry your luggage some distance, although staff were happy to help. Once in the hotel however, the rooms, restaurant and support were excellent. Well worth a visit for the view alone.

Staff was warm and welcoming and very helpful. We had an issue with our room the first night and they quickly made it possible to shift rooms. Truly delightful staff who work hard to make guest feel welcome.

Gorgeous property, clean and spacious room, easy walk to the castle with panoramic views, impeccable service. The only issue is the nerve-wracking drive to the hotel on extremely narrow, cobblestone streets and lack of parking. We lucked into one of 2 spaces in front but the other alternative would have been to drop off and park way down the mountain. There should be advance warning and maybe even a better solution! Reception clerk very helpful with suitcases and accommodating!

Staff were very professional and friendly. Hotel was very central in the beautiful medieval walled town. The restaurant and common areas had spectacular views. Parking and driving in the town were a bit tricky.

Hotel is situated in a small town hugging the top of a mountain with spectacular views. Small room but hotel has several public areas with views. We couldn’t get into hotel restaurant but the management directed us to nearby alternatives Beware driving into the village through a narrow passage in the town walls and very narrow “roads”The hotel is not well marked so I walked around the village to find it

Very unique delightful place. Did not fully understand what we had booked but it was great. Not really close to restaurants other than in this walled village. The name of the hotel is not identical to the signs in the village which caused confusion for us. Santa Maria is in the name on the sign posts which is important as it's a tricky village to navigate, especially with a car. Otherwise a great time.

Overall we had a really nice stay at Pousada do Marvao. The only complaints we had was a) when I dropped my wife off with our luggage at the door while I went to find a parking spot, no one helped her with the luggage. b) at dinner on our first night, the waiter inexplicably took my wife's menu from her before we had ordered, which made things a little more difficult. These were not big deals and really, our overall stay was very nice.

Marvao is a unique town in eastern Portugal, worth the effort to get here. And the lovely Pousada is the place to stay. Lovely view, helpful/friendly staff, nice rooms.

We love Marvao and the pousada is a great place to stay. On this visit we had a splendid room with balcony and amazing views across the border to Spain. The restaurant is recommended, both for breakfast and for dinner. All the staff we spoke with were friendly and welcoming. Parking can be a challenge but that just adds to the fun!

Very picturesque and exceeded expectations. What a great mountain top retreat. Fantastic views of the country side. Tight driving to the top. Don't follow the GPS through the small village at the base, drive around or you may have two less mirrors on your car.

We enjoyed our stay in this hotel which is in a brilliant location, with wonderful views from the dining room. We received a very warm welcome on arrival. Our room was a bit small and dark ( but that is the nature of this type of property in Portugal), and we were very comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal . The staff were knowledgeable about my gluten free needs, but there was no GF bread available. Breakfast was excellent.

Narrow, one-way, steep, winding cobblestone roads, what's not to love? Been getting used to that but the fellow who checked us in kindly parked our car for us rather than send me back out there. :-) Offered a view upgrade for €20, well spent, should have booked it in the first place. Breakfast room had a great view too, most memorable thing about breaky.

Very close to castle ( a must see in Portugal) but either rent a small car (there are 2 parking spaces at this hotel) or park in the lot lower down (where tour buses park) as the streets are very narrow (typical of all the charming old villages and must see sections of many of the towns/cities on The Iberian Peninsula).
