Spacious rooms with good facilities. The hotel has lots of character.

Staff were lovely, property is great, some rooms could do with a little update but overall it was a nice stay. I would stay again.

Such a comfortable bed, room was immaculate, staff were superb and so friendly and helpful. As I was leaving each morning before breakfast was served I was given to option of a breakfast bag which contained plenty to keep you going till lunch. All facilities are excellent and kept to extremely high standards.

Lovely hotel set in beautiful surroundings. Has a warm charm about it. Rooms are spacious, Bed very comfy. Staff were friendly, welcoming and very helpful.

Perfect for my son and me. We really enjoyed playing tennis, using the pool and gym. Breakfast was delicious and we appreciated it being made to order. Room was pretty tired, but it was fine for our purposes. A great stay for the price.

Start to finish, my stay was nothing short of a disaster. I have a feather allergy and had messaged the hotel pre-arrival to ensure the room would be prepared accordingly. Yet, walked in to find feather pillows on the bed. Two replacement pillows I was given were a joke—one was lumpy as hell, and the other was paper-thin I had to stack towels underneath to get any support. The bed itself, a torture device—lumpy springs poking through the mattress, a huge dip in the middle, and zero comfort. Add to that a freezing cold room where the heaters barely worked even on full blast. I ended up shivering through both nights. Cleanliness? Non-existent. Dust everywhere, carpets were filthy, and I kept my shoes on until I got into bed because the floor was so disgusting. The bathroom—when I lifted a “fresh” towel to my face, I was greeted with brown stains. I don’t even want to imagine what they were. A skylight in the bathroom was covered in dead insects, just to add to the nightmare. The room was damp—clearly, the hotel knows this, as there were three damp collectors in the closet and two plug-in air fresheners desperately trying (and failing) to mask the stench. Top it all off, the breakfast server smashed my plate by accident, and when I asked to be moved after the first night, I was flat-out denied. If I hadn’t booked a non-refundable rate, I would have left immediately, but instead, I had to endure two miserable nights of hell. Do yourself a favour—stay literally anywhere else

It’s a lovely hotel, great gym and pool and sauna. Breakfast is fantastic. Rooms I’ve had in the main tower and nearer the pool have all been good. Dog friendly and now has EV charging!

The property is very tired and in desperate need of an upgrade. Our room had a tiny little radiator with the windows letting in plenty of cold air. Disappointing for such a well known brand like Macdonald to let it's properties get like this. The food was excellent - which is always a reason to stay with MacDonald - but unfortunately, we won't be back to this hotel (not least until it's had a bit of tlc).

Great stay, close to train station to get to Edinburgh. The breakfast was prefect, order what you want from the menu and it’s all fresh and the service was amazing, can’t recommend this hotel enough, will defo be back, if I would change anything it would be the bed was 2 singles put together so could feel the gap so was just like sleeping in single bed even tho we are married and I would prefer a single bed for my daugther not just a pull out bed. But other then that was a fab stay

Had a fantastic overnight stay with my partner. Great 18th century building with loads of character and great facilities. will return back for another night in summer time.

Great trip. Staff were lovely’s though very chatty and having a great time at breakfast which I loved but others wouldn’t! Pool was great. Breakfast lovely. Would stay again
