Stopped in here for a one night stopover enroute to Marloth Park, selected due to high reviews score. A secure spot. Sue and Belinda went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed, from catering to a (sort of) vegetarian, to extra blankets for a nippy night. Whilst the building is an historical one I feel the interior could do with a makeover - the main dining/social/pub area is quite cluttered with a strange mix of decor that does not appear to relate to either South Africa, Shamrock Arms as a name, nor the railway history of both the town and the building. Considering how cold it was on the night we stayed I was disappointed that none of the fireplaces were lit to add to the atmosphere. Also disappointed that given South Africa's dire state of electricity supply, the rooms had electric blankets and aircon/heating units. Personally I think some updated bedding (think scrumptious duvets and hot water bottles) would have been a better investment. Plus the towels we had, although they looked great, turned out to have holes in them.

Great place for an overnight stop going to or from Kruger. Rooms were great; nice to stay in a place which had retained it's character but offered up to date facilities. Both Jaco and Terry were very warm hosts, made us feel very welcome. Jaco is very entertaining and a good chef.

Made for a convenient stop over on my way to Kruger. Great hospitality from the moment I arrived, I was made to feel very welcome and included which is always nice as a single traveller. Dinner was lovely and they really took care to cater for my specific dietary requirements (lactose and gluten intolerance)

Had a lovely stay here with great hosts Terry & Jaco who made us feel very welcome. Only stayed for 1 night but very memorable evening spent with Terry & Jacu on the veranda drinking wine & resolving the worlds problems.

Chillaxing weekend, around the Num Num Trail Run 32km, near Machadadorp. Very rugged countryside, with hiking and walking trails in abundance and mountain biking trails too (although we didn't try any of these). Tough conditions requiring superior fitness. The town itself is a bit run down but this establishment was amazing. Exploding with personality and charm. Jaco is a legend. Arrive hungry - the dinner and breakfast portions are huge and too tasty not to clean your plate!

Great welcome and very helpful hosts - couldn't do enough for you. Rooms are behind old pub and are very comfortable and clean. Food is enthusiastically and individually prepared - again great service. Relaxing in the bar before and afterwards was a pleasure. Recommended stopover.

The town/city doesn't look very appealing when first arriving, but we felt safe. Shamrock Arms provided what we needed. The staff - notably Jaco :) - and owner were very friendly. Food was good. The place was clean. And we would be happy to stay there next time we're in the neighbourhood. The place had many returning guests, who were friendly and added to the positive wipe at Shamrock Arms.

Since we were arriving in Johannesburg in mid-afternoon, we were looking for an overnight B&B on our way to Kruger. The Shamrock Arms was the perfect pit stop. We loved this place; it was exactly what we had in mind for our B&B driving tour of South Africa. We got in late but after a quick and friendly welcome, we had a drink at the bar and then dinner in the cozy dining room. Dinner was delicious but what made it truly special was the opportunity to mingle with the hosts and other guests after dinner and learn alot about South Africa from a variety of different perspectives. It was fun (the hot toddies helped the conversation along) and very educational. In the morning, we had a hearty Full English breakfast and got lots of help from our host as to where we should stop on our way to Hazyview. The advice was spot on and we had a very enjoyable day thanks to our host.

Shamrock Arms is a unique stay that we highly recm. You won't be disappointed by their welcome and hospitality. We arrived late and they opened the kitchen and whipped up a delicious dinner. Had great visit, provided perspective on area and recm on what to see and how to travel. The rooms are spot on for a great 4 star -- really comfortable (and the best TV channel range we experienced in all of Soi Africa). A stay you won't forget and will really enjoy!
