The cabin was well-equipped, even luxurious, with a great view. Esmeralda, our cook and staff person, couldn't have been more helpful and kind. The grounds are peaceful with great bird watching. We kayaked every day and did yoga on the screened in porch. I was so happy we decided to pass by here! It was restorative and relaxing, with great affordable meals. Thank you!

The place is great to relax and be in touch with nature all the staff is amazing and they will definitely make your experience unique and you will feel like another member of the family, overall it’s a great place and there are so many things to do in the premises that you will hardly want to leave… if you are up for a drive and want to be in one of the nicest lagoons with not a lot of people around it’s definitely worth it… highly recommend it…

This is one of the most unique and beautiful places I have ever stayed. And the food was excellent--I just paid twice as much for a pizza in Merida that was half as good as the one I had at El Chital.

The property owner or manager never showed up the day we arrived to check in. We were ghosted and they better not charge me for the 2 nights I booked in advance!

The location is excellent, the bed was comfortable, plenty of hot water. We enjoyed kayaking in the morning. Breakfast was delicious and the service was great from the time we arrived to when we left. Definitely would revisit.

This hotel's location is spectacular, right next to a pristine lagoon. This is a great option for nature lovers. There's almost no light pollution, the lagoon is fully surrounded by mangroves and you can hardly see any other constructions around the lagoon. The hotel's staff is very friendly and efficient, and the food is delicious.

Excellent cabin with view of the lake. Good value for money and ecologically sound. This is in a mangrove so make sure you take repellent. Really good home cooked food!!!

It’s in the middle of nowhere.. 50 km to Chetumal and there’s nothing interesting closer. Hotel is old and cheaply built. $100 per night is way too expensive for what you get. Staff was friendly but not professionally trained. I was very disappointed

This hotel is in the jungle in the middle of nowhere. It took us more than three hours to find the rural road it is on. However, the area is very beautiful and it was fun to spend a night in the jungle, listening to animal noises. So if you are looking for a deserted place with nothing around but nature - this is it. But if you are into bars and crowds, go elsewhere. The hotel has seven log cabins, a small pool and a tiny restaurant with average food. But given the fact that your other choice is catch your own dinner and eat it raw, you feel happy that there is a restaurant there, no matter how good. There is a beautiful lagoon there called Laguna Guerrero and you can go kayaking if you want to (kayaks provided by the hotel for free).

El Chital is certainly off the beaten path, esconded as it is on the "other" side of the famous lagoon in Bacalar (it's about 1 hour away from the main town of Bacalar) and surrounded by nature, nature and more nature. It is a very nice place to "reconnect" with yourself and enjoy serenity, peacefulness. The cabins are minimally decorated and appointed (I believe this is by design) but spacious and comfortable, with a good A/C and large bed (which is also comfortable). It's about the cleanest log cabin I have ever seen... It's somewhat of a challenge to get to El Chital since it is pretty much off the map, but it is worth it once you get there. The staff is just wonderful; you are treated like a family member. Especially true at mealtime--the cozy restaurant feels like you are eating in someone's living room, which made to order dishes that are delicious (especially breakfast and all desserts). Overall, El Chital is a unique place, in a good way. Go prepared (bug spray and other provisions) as it is a little far from the nearest convenience store or pharmacy. Again, this is not some action packed resort; it is a quiet, contemplative, nature lover's paradise that happens to serve excellent food by a wonderful, caring staff.

Vrbo verified review

We took a chance on this place despite it not having any VRBO reviews and are so glad we did. It is definitely out of the way but you are rewarded with a tranquil retreat in a beautiful setting. This seems to be a predominantly Mexican retreat which may explain the lack of VRBO reviews. We (husband and twin 10 yr old daughters) stayed for two nights. The cabins are simple but have air conditioning and are clean. The kids and I had massages which were fantastic, and we went on a fishing trip on the lake which was great fun. We didn't see the manatee but we did catch a lot of fish - we had barracuda ceviche for dinner with what we caught. There are kayaks and SUPs freely available. There is no town to speak of nearby so we ate solely in the restaurant which was pretty good. A couple of things to note: - The quoted price you see on VRBO is about half what you pay in the end (taxes are added) - you do see this before you pay and it's still a pretty good deal, so just an FYI - Communication is terrible, our booking request was accepted but no information or directions were sent. We sent a number of emails and got no reply to any of them, however, once we were there the service was great. - The location is pretty hard to find; El Chital and Raudales did not find anything relevant in our GPS but basically you just drive from Chetumal to Laguna Guerrero and then keep following that road until you pass through Raudales and reach El Chital. There is more information here: http://www.elchital.com/ - The kids really did not like the music in the restaurant. For breakfast the playlist included "White Christmas" which was pretty odd in July, and at dinnertime it was cover versions of artists like Adele. (They made me write this!) Have fun!!
