El Chital is certainly off the beaten path, esconded as it is on the "other" side of the famous lagoon in Bacalar (it's about 1 hour away from the main town of Bacalar) and surrounded by nature, nature and more nature. It is a very nice place to "reconnect" with yourself and enjoy serenity, peacefulness.
The cabins are minimally decorated and appointed (I believe this is by design) but spacious and comfortable, with a good A/C and large bed (which is also comfortable). It's about the cleanest log cabin I have ever seen...
It's somewhat of a challenge to get to El Chital since it is pretty much off the map, but it is worth it once you get there. The staff is just wonderful; you are treated like a family member. Especially true at mealtime--the cozy restaurant feels like you are eating in someone's living room, which made to order dishes that are delicious (especially breakfast and all desserts).
Overall, El Chital is a unique place, in a good way. Go prepared (bug spray and other provisions) as it is a little far from the nearest convenience store or pharmacy. Again, this is not some action packed resort; it is a quiet, contemplative, nature lover's paradise that happens to serve excellent food by a wonderful, caring staff.
