For the price, it needs some serious improvements and updates. Things were broken and heavily used.

A simple but comfortable hotel. Check out the banana plants growing in a greenhouse behind the restaurant. Crazy.

I had a good stay here. The room is reasonably spacious and comfortable, if not particularly fancy. The main attraction, of course, is the private hot spring, which was fantastic. The place is a short walk from town, but after sunset it's very dark on that road. There's a shuttle from their sister hotel in town in the afternoons but it doesn't run late. Still, that shuttle and one to the train station was appreciated. The little hub of restaurants on the premises is OK - not a huge selection, but there are some tasty options. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I would stay there again for the private hot spring - that was fantastic like I say. Decent value for money for what you get.

The next door onsen was excellent as was the balcony shower and cedar tub attached to our room. The only issue was the location - too remote. But we solved this issue by using the hotel shuttle to and from the center of town. Bus service from center is fine.

A decent hotel - the hot springs bath tubs are amazing! There is a handy set of goods to buy at reception, and a decent range of options in the restaurant that her opened recently - the pizza was delicious! The rooms are a little tired but clean and comfortable. My main disappointment was that the restaurant area closed at 9 and there was no bar. Since it’s a dark trek to town, and there isn’t a great deal open late in town, it would have been great if there was a bar that stayed open a bit later, especially on the weekend.

So, this hotel is quite far from the station, which is fine to enjoy nature, but there is absolutely nothing around it to get drinks or food. So we had to use the hotel buffet for our dinner time. It was super expensive, kids must pay the same price as adults. And you need to add more money for drinks. The web site mentions more than 30 dishes, and it's a lie. Overall the food was just ok. Really no worth the price. If you have tattoos you cannot use the onsen. It's not written on the website, which is a shame because that's the reason we chose this hotel. The room was small, and the mattress was super hard, it was really uncomfortable. The bathtub on the balcony was the only positive point of the stay.

Great hotel. I was there for only a night and I didn't have much time to go into the Onsen. I enjoyed the Rotenburo though. It is a nice Hotel.

The restaurant only accepted reservations, so if you didn't have one before you made your reservations, you couldn't eat there, and we were told to leave and find somewhere else to eat. They offered no alternatives, and we ended up walking along a very dark and cold road back into town to get something to eat. No taxis were available, and no restaurants or convenience stores were nearby.

Having the shower on the balcony seemed a bit odd, but it worked.

Decent place. Nice staff and reasonably close to the town centre. I like the bath with hot water coming straight from the hot spring but not sure about the open air baths.

it was so nice to have the tub in the room. My Amrican husband who is not comfortable using the public hot spring tub could also enjoy the hot spring water.

The room was great. We had a deck with private onsen. The staff was very helpful. My one complaint is that it is far from the train station and the hotel shuttle only runs during peak hours. I would suggest paying the 730 yen for a taxi

As mentioned in other reviews the bathing situation is unique (but no problem for me personally). On the balcony there is a shower and a wooden tub. The wooden tub can be filled with hot water from a nearby spring which is a unique touch. The shower is lower down and designed to be used sat on the stool provided, traditional in this area of the world I believe. The shower can be put higher up though and a privacy curtain drawn so no problem with privacy or temperature (in April). The rest of the hotel was perfectly fine although not massively geared up for the English visitor. Rooms didn't exactly 'wow' me but it was clean and offered a good nights sleep. There is a minibus to the train station when you depart which leaves promptly at 9:30 and 10:00. There is also a shared indoor spring bath and an outdoor one too which is available at the rear (not well advertised). Seperate for men and women as this is a 'traditional situation' so bear that in mind if you're shy!

It's good hotel with basic services. I asked two times for the shuttle service and its was not available early in the morning and late night. Probably this is the weakest point. Taxi services are so expensive for 1.7 Km drivers charged 1700 to 1800 Yen.

First. You need a car. The public transport doesnt really work as it comes as less as one per hour. The bath is great and private even on the balcony. Room was old but clean. Therr was smell but stil acceptable. An OK hotel if you r not looking for luxury and near nikko town.

The hotel is secluded and surrounded by nature. We enjoyed the onsen and private balcony. Breakfast and dinner were buffet style. All staff were very attentive and pleasant. There is a shuttle service to book in the morning and afternoon up to 5pm. If you want to stroll in town in the evenings a taxi would be required at 750 JPY. It is a nice hotel for relaxing but not in the centre of town and quiet.
