First off I want to say that Tomi is a very gracious host, he is very kind, helpful & I appreciated the hospitality. The house is very clean & well kept, and the dorm room bed was actually quite comfortable. One thing to know about Oumi however is that it is a VERY small space. The dorm room has just enough space for the 4 beds & shelves to fit some bags. It is really not enough space for people to get in and out of bags or move around without bumping into others in the room. The kitchen & sink/showers are right outside the dorm room too so it can be quite noisy at times. There’s also only 2 showers and 2 toilets. The common area only has TWO seats for the whole house. It’s clear they don’t want people to hang out here, they only really want you to sleep there & leave. Lastly, while I was aware of the house being closed from 12-5 as mentioned on booking site, that is a VERY weird & inappropriate requirement for guests to not be allowed in the house like that. I booked this trip a little last minute so I didn’t have much for options & I reluctantly chose this place. They should be asking a lot less per night for this place than they do considering how small it is, the fact that you are not allowed in house from 12-5, and how far from everything it is in Kyoto. If you just want a place to sleep that is clean and comfortable & you plan to be out a lot then this place works fine for that & again Tomi is a wonderful host. I personally wouldn’t stay here again though

We completely loved it! The host Tommy san was adorable, super welcoming, his English is perfect so we could communicate perfectly and get lots of recommendations, and casual chats about our itinerary and everything. The house is super comfortable, amenities were perfect our Japanese style room had everything and super cozy. Everything was perfect, If we come back to Kyoto again, we will definitely stay here again.

Excellent accomodations within easy walking distance of Nijo Station. Do keep in mind that the Guest House is closed between noon and 5pm. The host, Tomi, is wonderful and very kind. His light breakfast sandwiches are also delicious!

I booked due to the many excellent reviews but now I think many of those reviews are questionable. Tommy is very nice and friendly, the place is clean and the location is excellent. BUT the very BASIC need of a travel or tourist is REST. While the neighbourhood is quiet, please note that you can LITERALLY HEAR the other guests sneezed and snored next door or opposite u. You CAN HEAR THEIR EVERY MOVEMENT, EVERY STEP. Literally. Worst if they decide to chat ‘quietly’ into the night. It’s a charming old house no doubt, but it is not suitable for more than a night stay as you won’t be able to sleep unless you are one of those that can sleep easily with noise around you. So while u try to sleep, you are hoping that no one will continue chatting or decides to take turns to walk down and up the squeaky stairs to go the bathroom or wash up in the middle of the night. Even when they move inside the room, YES, you can HEAR. I later saw a review that if you don’t need to sleep, yes, you can book this place. It’s quaint and charming. But if you need to rest and sleep, this is not a place for you. You can’t stay in your room to rest in the day even if you can’t sleep in the night. Why? HOUSE RULES FOR CLEANING. Avoid this place and only trust reviewers that have been around for years.

TERRIBLE PLACE! BECAUSE I WAS 5 MINUTES LATE THEY LEFT ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET, THEY ALSO CANCELED MY RESERVATION FOR THE OTHER NIGHTS, AND THEY KEEPED MY MONEY, REFUSAL TO GIVE ANY REFUND, EVEN PARTIAL!!!! TERRIBLE! AVOID IT!
