This was our 2nd stay at this lovely welcoming hotel in Coulon. Returning to a hotel I think speaks volumes, and after our 2nd visit I'm pleased to say if anything it's even better. This is a great stopover for us on route from the South West to Caen. It's about halfway on an 8 hour drive, and is not too far off the motorway. Coulon is so relaxing and tranquil after a motorway journey, and you can take a boat and paddle gently round the canal network. It's beautiful. Then head for a meal at one of the restaurants which are within walking distance. We went to The Gourmand just around the corner and it was very good. The hotel is right at the waterside and you can park on the street, or there are some places reserved right alongside the entrance. My pictures are not of the hotel, you can see plenty of those on this site, but of Coulon and the beautiful area around. We will definitely be back.

I made a last-minute decision to stay in Coulon instead of Niort, and it couldn't have been a better choice! The hotel is clean and well-maintained, the hard-working owners ensure your comfort and that any questions or issues are addressed. My room overlooked the river at street level and was perfect for the off-season (might get a little noisy during peak tourist time). The peace and calm of this little village that is the gateway to the Marais Poitevin were just what I was looking for and the Hotel au Marais was the perfect base to explore the surrounding area. This small quaint family run hotel is ideally situated on a canal waterfront in a central location in Coulon, with close proximity to restaurants and shops. The room we stayed in was beautifully presented, full of character and appropriately furnished. In addition, it was spacious (including the bathroom), extremely clean, had a comfortable bed and had a window looking out over the canal. Free Wi-Fi was available and worked well. A more than adequate continental style breakfast was provided which comprised of yoghurts, cereals, fresh bread / pastries, ham, cheeses, juice and hot beverages. If driving, there are several parking spaces on the roadway at the hotel, however, if taken, there is parking available at the nearby town square car park.

We arrived on a scorching hot day and to minimise the heat, the shutters on the windows in our room had been closed and the room was in darkness, but still very hot. Later in the evening when we returned after a wonderful afternoon/evening in Coulon - on the canal, at the museum, listening to live music in the town square and having a lovely dinner at Le Central Restaurant - it was a joy to find that our room had a wonderful outlook, directly above the canal and that a cool breeze was making the room very comfortable. This is an unpretentious hotel with a relaxed, family atmosphere and pleasant decor, all well suited to its location. A simple continental breakfast was included in our booking fee. The room and bathroom were very clean and we were more than happy with our choice of hotel. If we have an opportunity to return to Coulon, we would certainly rebook this accommodation.

The location was on the river,offering lovely views. The hotel was delightful, with some charming touches to the decor. A local restaurant was recommended by reception for dinner and we enjoyed an excellent meal there. We would certainly return to this hotel.
