Since childhood, I have been averse to onions, garlic, and masalas (including those made with cinnamon). My father passed on his genes to me. In my 35+ years of official tours, travels, and vacations, I used to dread the food served during the three meals of the day. To overcome this handicap, I used to carry pickles, curd, and dal powders with me. From 07/08/2026 to 08/08/2026, I stayed at Hotel Samanway Luxury Boutique Hotel, Udupi, Karnataka. This dread was broken on 08/08/2026 when I entered the morning breakfast room. The board was a great welcome: “All food prepared without onion and garlic”. My face lit up. There were items like ilayada, Kanchipuram idli, and a plethora of other dishes with Tulu/Kannada (maybe Konkani) names. I tried almost 90%. It was a wonderful breakfast. No onion. No garlic. No cinnamon. In my 62nd year, I can say with authority that this was the best food (breakfast) that I had ever had. On a scale of 1 to 10, I will grade it at 9999. Please stay here.
