A former IMF type executive, Italian national Bruno, owns and manages the property with flair, sprezzatura and Northern European efficiency; Manuel, his front of house manager of 3 other staffers, is a dab hand with breakfast, preparing the most tasty scrambled eggs in my life since 1980; while taken into care by Bruno, dog Bella, lends a canine affection; while Bruno’s curios placed in my room, (including Portuguese cannon balls) provides much charm and personality, complementing any interest you may have in visiting a most wonderful Island of bucolic charm and faded past grandeur, I loved my week long stay in the Jardin.

And absolutely amazing place. I felt like I was transported back in time 200 hundred years. The owners are absolutely wonderful and I think they provide the nicest breakfast I’ve ever had.

In the crumbling former colonial jewel of Ilha de Moçambique, Jardim dos Aloés is a perfect little oasis. Two historic houses have been painstaking restored and modernised around a tranquil verdant oasis of aloes (there are aloes everywhere) in the shade of a towering Indian almond tree. There are only three rooms. Mine was exquisitely restored, with old beams, carved, panelled doors and huge bed elegantly draped in gauze (mosquitoes love Mozambique). But the careful restoration is accented with modern touches - the en-suite bathroom featured both a sunken bath and a separate shower. There was air condition, an antique desk where I could work, even a day bed for those languorous afternoons… But if the property itself is beautiful is beautiful, it was the hospitality that truly made my stay on the island. Bruno and his wife Judith are impeccable hosts - warm, welcoming, happy to help with arranging tours and transfers - and their staff are charming and friendly and attentive. The complimentary breakfast was a revelation - it was different every morning, with home-made breads, jams and juices, hot dishes that changed daily (poached eggs, basil quiche, omelettes) served on the first floor terrace with refreshing lemongrass or Ceylon tea and excellent coffee (Judith even makes exceptionally fine gelato!). The view from the rooftop - especially at sunset - are simply stunning. Mozambique Island is an enchanting place, and Jardim dos Aloés the perfect spot from which to explore

A pousada é um charme! A casa antiga preserva toda a beleza da arquitetura típica da Ilha, criando um ambiente acolhedor e cheio de história. A equipe é extremamente simpática e atenciosa — sempre disposta a ajudar no que for preciso. ⸻ The guesthouse is absolutely charming! The old house retains the beautiful, traditional architecture of the Island, creating a warm and historic atmosphere. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful — always ready to assist with anything. Bruno, the owner, is a wonderful and welcoming person. The rooms are cozy, clean, and tastefully decorated. The breakfast is delicious and generous, with great options. I highly recommend this guesthouse and will definitely stay there again if I return to the Island!
