Beautifully renovated and decorated hotel - our room had retro-themed decor, including a record-player and vintage telephone, and we were admiring the beautiful designs from the moment we stepped into the hotel and the room. The room itself is intelligently and uniquely organized, utilizing space in a way that's helpful and clever and the retro aesthetic was awesome. Our only issue was a very loud night club or concert that was going on just below, but that's clearly out of their hands. A gem.

It was a great place for a quick overnight stay while traveling through Merced. Dinner was delicious at the onsite restaurant, too.

Always a great stay

I grew up in Atwater / Merced and had not been back here in over 10 plus years. I live in Southern California now. I came here due to unexpected circumstances, due to loss of a friend/ family member. I was really impressed with the hotel setup and 24hr front desk service, which was very accommodating especially that I got in from my trip early and left later the next day. The front desk was able to hold my luggage for me while I had to take care of other personal events. My room and view was beautiful!! I opted for the Arbor Room. It was more than I could ask for. Stunning and level of comfort was perfect. I absolutely LOVED the restaurants and cafes, entertainment in vicinity. Rainbird was beautiful as well as the food served there for their breakfast and dinner menus. Service was an overall winner for me, great service. Everyone from 24hr front desk, bell service was super helpful and accommodating. The price for stay was reasonable. It was a short stay, I’d love to stay longer next time. I’d hands down 100 percent stay here again. I look forward to my next visit. Thanks again El Capitan Hotel!! :)

Beautiful room. Wonderful staff. Clean. Comfortable bed. Cool and delicious dining options. I ate at both Mainzer and Native Son. Definitely recommend.

Very cute hotel in the middle of Merced. They just opened their patio and had a live music event that was very fun. Loved the gym setup and the fact that the water tap had both sparkling and still water. Room was great - loved the steamer and the gooseneck kettle for coffee. Also enjoyed that you can cast from your phone to the TV! The restaurant, Rainbird, was also great. Would definitely stay again!

Despite showing the person at the front desk our confirmation number and Expedia confirmation email, the front desk reception staff at the hotel refused to honor our reservation because they "couldn't find it". The person attending to us was extremely rude and refused to make even the slightest effort to "find" the reservation, instead only repeatedly insisting that we just make and pay for a new reservation. After insisting that he call a manager, the reservation was suddenly found. Of course, he had to passive-aggressively take a bunch of calls while checking us in and the whole process took over 20 minutes. Completely inept and out of touch with any semblance of the values of hospitality, borderline crooks.

I have stayed at the El Capitan a half dozen times. It’s always very pleasant, good neighborhood, convenient location and nice rooms.

great hotel, amazing staff, super friendly + vip status Amazing location for shows, movie theatre, food and more. hotel os very nice ,very modern and everything is always in working order. great rooms with comfortable bed, good wi-fi , good size tv's in every room. no matter where you stay in the hotel, you always here noise from outside and traffic and trains, BUT THATS NOT THE HOTELS FAULT!

Awesome place everything is within walking distance; need more business/shops around the area

The suite was excellent. The hotel is located on the main street for what downtown Merced has to offer.

I have a preference for staying in old hotels that are in good condition. The El Capitan is excellent in all regards. It is a historic hotel built in 1931. It has been fixed up to contemporary standards, while maintaining the historical integrity of the hotel. The restaurant is excellent - as good as anything I’ve experienced recent years. It was a pleasant surprise. Everything is great at the El Capitann!

Just stayed one night but it was very quiet and clean. Would definitely stay here again and have already told my friends about it
