A 3 star hotel without a 24 hour desk. The front doors are locked during the mid-day until 2 or 3 pm, not really sure. The front door is on a narrow walkway beside the river that is used by many single men; sitting, eating, drinking. Also, that front door and walkway face the very hot afternoon sun. The hotel is totally run by one man who also runs two restaurants that open to the other side of the building (the plaza) and it seems he is a primary cook for those restaurants. The restaurant kitchens are in the basement and exhaust their kitchens to the front door walkway. Breakfast is very minimal. Room was small, clean and quiet. The location is very good, in the heart of Besancon.

Nobody had advised us that the property is in a pedestrian only area - must park 4 blocks away. It's a bare bones property, very very simple rooms. Great location and friendly staff.

We loved this hotel and the French restaurant attached (we didn't try the Italian one but other guests recommended it). Staff really went out of their way to ensure we enjoyed our stay. We had great view of square, others had view of river.

The very pleasant and helpful owner not only runs an excellent hotel but two restaurants in the same building. The room was clean and reasonably priced with excellent air conditioning. The location is perfect and central to this very interesting area of Besancon. parking available close by at parking Pasteur if you have a car. Both the Hotel Vauban and this beautiful city are highly recommended. We really enjoyed our stay.

The hotiel is very decent, our room was clean and spacious with comfortable beds. The parking is in the shopping centre (a few minutes walking distance). Can be definitely recommended for staying.

Good facility and location. No parking, difficult to get to by car, advised no wifi working upon arrival.

For other travellers from North America who are arriving by car: Besancon is confusing to get around in a vehicle as the streets are narrow, not on a grid pattern, and a lot of them are one way. For this hotel it’s easier to set your gps to parking nearby (200m-500m) and walk over to the hotel bringing your luggage with you. There is currently construction in the area of the hotel, so it makes it more difficult to manoeuvre around by car. The front door is clear we buzzed in using the small silver button on the speaker beside the door with the hotel name on it. The reception area often doesn’t have anyone there and there is no signage or bell to alert anyone that you need assistance so be prepared to wait for 20 minutes. There were small white flies in our room but they were not bothersome and mostly stayed by the window. Other than the above mentioned the hotel was adequate.

Hotel is in a fantastic location with the river on one side and an interesting street on the other. Our initial booking for one night was unexpectedly extended to four and we can't fault the service we have received here. There is no bar or restaurant within the hotel but step outside and the choice is amazing within a few meters. The Hotel Vauban offers continental breakfast with a good selection. The rooms are spotlessly clean and the bathrooms extremely modern. We feel very fortunate to have found this unassuming gem.

A return trip to the Hotel Vauban and the fact that we have returned on more than one occasion says it all!

A small hotel on the river in the center of town. The owner and the staff were extremely helpful. Located the best, not tourist and not overly expensive restaurants. Helped to organize visits to sights. Answered all questions. They gave very personal service to everyone. Definitely a hotel I would stay ata again.

This is the hotel we are all looking for. Friedly, clean, perfectly organized and located. Right downtown Besançn, where you want to be. Only issue : parking is quite a challenge. But it would be the same for any hotel located downtown in Besançon.

sevice, cleanliness, room standard all to perfection. stylish bathroom. even got an apology for a fault that did not matter to me. has two restaurants though I didn't try either myself. read the address literally as the entrance does face the river unlike surrounding buildings that face the square.
