Royal Maritime Hotel is adequate in all respects, although I think overpriced in relation to the condition of the interior in the area where my room was. The hotel is need of updating, and things like the location of plug sockets, and the lack of USB sockets for charging telephones &c needs to be thought about. The food at breakfast was a bit like a boarding school breakfast or the junior rates mess in the 1980s, so that could benefit from some modern thinking. The staff were very kind, and welcoming. The parking provision is very limited. The wallpaper in the room I used was peeling off at the edges. The mid-beige colour made the room look very dismal. There was no way to control the temperature of the room other than open or close the window. The carpets and soft furnishings are grubby. There is no guide to the hotel facilities either in hard copy in the room or on the hotel's website. There is a small plunge pool, but no indication of when it is open, for example. The Library is a really nice feature, and seems to be a good hub to access charitable services for former sailors and Royal Marines. The area around the hotel is grotty, and the steps to the hotel were littered with cigarettes which I find disgusting, and reflects poorly on the attitudes I can expect to find within an establishment. I would consider using this hotel again if there was a good deal on the pirce, but not at full price.

Very good location for Histori Dockyard & Gunwharf Quays. Room absolutely boiling with only an old desk-fan to help. Noisy - kept awake by events on 2 of the 3 nights. Raised with reception and was brushed off & told 'well we do hold events here'.

Our first room was a basic room very tired paint and wallpaper peeling off. We paid extra to move to a classic room that had been refurbished which was 100% better.

Interesting place, full of character. Friendly and informative greeting on arrival, excellent breakfast and perfect location. The hotel itself is wonder in the communal area's, the style is old maritime which reflects in its title. Some areas are long overdue renovations, the carpets through the accommodation are worn and stained and a touch of fresh paint would go down a treat. We found our room to be of adequate service but was quite hot, we didn't sleep well. A hot shower and hearty breakfast restored our energy and checkout ensued. In all, a pleasant quirky hotel in a fantastic location, we would use again.

Lovely old-fashioned hotel with excellent friendly and helpful staff but the limitations of an old hotel. Not the most glamorous surroundings but I would definitely stay again.

Has obviously had a makeover, and rooms are fresh and comfortable - although all overlook each-other across central area, with no net curtains. Public spaces still look tired and dated. Biggest gripe was the catering. Absolutely dreadful. Breakfast was cheap products, grumpy service. Old fashioned toaster set by staff to either incinerate or barely warm the cheap sliced bread. Croissants like tiny bullets. No boiled eggs (despite menu). Ate there one evening and regretted it all night/next day - ordered a basic burger in a sourdough bun. Was cheapest (not sourdough) burger bun ever, singed in stripes on a griddle that made it smell and taste foul (couldn't get rid of the taste despite brushing teeth multiple times!). Fries were full of black bits of manky potato. Burger tasted of cheap, old, vegetable oil. I was really hungry, arriving late after a long journey, or I would have stopped eating after first mouthful. As it was, I ate half and regretted it. Yucky yuck.

Room was ready when they said. Very clean. Updated bathroom. No safe in room. No air conditioning in room (luckily didn’t need it). Small room but was fine for the 2 of us and for one night. Bed was very comfortable and water pressure in shower was great. No hooks or storage shelves in bathroom. Not a major deal but had to make do with living out of shelves in bedroom. Would visit again.

These are updated rooms in an older building that houses a Club and supports for veterans. Great library room and historic mariner plaques all around. Fabulous location near the historic dockyard where we spent both days of our stopover. The staff are excellent! The laundry is handy and uses 1 pound coins. They sell soap pods at reception.

Spacious room with tv and tea/coffee facilities. Plentiful supply of tea etc. Bathroom also of a good size but shower was a bit lacklustre. Ideally placed for visiting the Museum of the Royal Navy which includes HMS Victory and The Mary Rose. Also near the Gunwharf Quays area with shops, restaurants and the Spinaker Tower.

Breakfast was very disappointing, choice and quality was poor. Plus there weren't enough staff. Room was lean enough though looking a bit tired.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Great location for visiting the historic dockyard. Parking over the road in pay and display which is very reasonably priced especially with the hotel discount. Would stay there again.

Wonderful grand entrance area and central atrium. Ballroom and bar area good. Location great for Naval museum. Helpful staff. But rooms seem in real need of redecorating and this lets down the overall impressive style of the hotel. Wallpaper peeling and carpets worn. It may just be my room in West Wing.

Room smelt a little of smoke which was odd - room was clean but did not smell fresh. Not a big deal but thought I’d mention it. Was very convenient for me though for the station first thing so perfect from this perspective.
