About Prambanan Temple

Located 17 kilometres northeast of Yogyakarta, Prambanan Temple is known as the largest Hindu site in Indonesia. You can find approximately 240 temples within its complex. As the second-largest Hindu site in Southeast Asia, this temple has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Prambanan Temple, or locally known as Roro Jonggrang Temple, is also famous for its majestic architectural design. The Shiva is the main temple with a height of 47 meters. According to historical records, the construction of Prambanan Temple was carried out in 850 AD. Unfortunately, the great earthquake destroyed parts of the temple in the 16th century. Afterwards, the Dutch government has begun restoration of Prambanan Temple in 1918. These rebuilding efforts lasted until 1953. Aside from being a historical tourist destination, Prambanan Temple is also used to hold many art shows. The most popular one is the Ramayana Ballet show. This art performance takes the storyline from the reliefs in Prambanan Temple, which tells the story of Ramayana.
