The ancestors created this festival as a gratitude expression to nature for the life it brought to the community. Before 1989, the valley was only for the ethnicities who lived around Baliem Valley. However, over the years after, tourists have been allowed to see and participate in this festival.

After being paused for about two years after COVID-19 spread, in 2023, Baliem Valley Festival is finally being held again. This festival is usually held in August, and the exact location has changed over the years because Baliem Valley consists of different districts.
