I also expected Expedia to do more to verify that the property and its hosting arrangements were legitimate before allowing it to be listed. My experience has left me with concerns about the verification process and how disputes like this are handled. I would encourage future guests to communicate only through the booking platform and obtain any promises, including refunds, in writing before making decisions.
