There are many rechargeable cards used to pay for transport fares in Japan, and not everyone has to have one depending on what they use and need. But most cover all train and bus transport. For example, in most major cities in Japan, these include Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto, and Fukuoka.

So how are IC cards different from Suica, Pasmo, and Icoca?

Getting to know Suica IC cards

Suica

Suica is a prepaid travel card that can be used for travelling. It can also be used to pay for groceries from vending machines in Japan. It's easy to use, just touch the card over the ticket gates.

If you're new to Suica, a deposit of 500 yen is required and Suica cards can be used for both adults and children. What's different is that for the children's payment system, the ticket price will be much cheaper.

Suica can be used for JR trains, subways, and buses. But it can also be used to take the Tokyo Monorail to Haneda Airport. To get a Suica card, it can be purchased at major JR stations or from vending machines. Suica cards can also be topped up if they run out, at the place where you bought them.

For tourists who visiting Japan, you can choose the "Welcome Suica" card. The difference with native Japanese is that the Welcome Suica card does not require a deposit and expires automatically after 28 days. The remaining balance cannot be cashed out, so use up the remaining Welcome Suica balance if you decide to return to your home country.

Getting to know Pasmo IC cards

Pasmo IC cards

Not much different from Suica, Pasmo is also a card used to make payments when taking public transport. From train rides, subway rides, metro stations, and bus rides.

Pasmo cards can be purchased at major stations, including subway stations, at vending machines. Just tap the English language option for travellers coming to Japan. Some people also like to buy Pasmo cards with special Sanrio characters, which are limited editions.

The special Pasmo card for tourists travelling to Japan is the Pasmo Passport. The Pasmo itself will be valid for travellers for four weeks. There is no deposit fee, nor are there any refunds if there is still a balance on it.

Getting to know Icoca IC cards

Icoca cards are transport cards for paying for public transport. Icoca is similar to Pasmo and Suica, except that Icoca is only sold in Western Japan (Kansai Region), such as the cities of Kyoto, Osaka, Chugoku, and Hokuriku.

To get an Icoca card, you can buy it at most train stations and vending machines. Icoca cards can also be purchased online through Klook. And the Icoca card for travellers is called Kansai One Pass, which has the advantage of being able to get discounts at various tourist attractions in the Kansai region.

All of the above card requirements can be adjusted according to where you want to go on holiday in Japan. If you're travelling in western Japan, you'll need an Icoca card rather than a Pasmo or Suica card.

The difference between the three cards is that they are issued by different companies. Suica is issued by JR East, Pasmo by railway, subway, and bus operators in Tokyo other than JR, and Icoca is issued by JR West.

How do I get an IC card?

It is not difficult to get an IC card in Japan, as they can be obtained at ticket machines and ticket counters of the train companies that issue them. However, a deposit is required. But for travellers, there is no need to make a deposit, only the time allowance of the card can be used within four weeks.

For native Japanese living in Japan, IC cards: Suica, Pasmo & Icoca are valid forever. However, if they are not used within ten years, they will automatically become invalid. If there is no balance, it doesn't matter, right? But if there is a balance, isn't it a shame?

How do I know the remaining balance?

When you use IC cards: Suica, Pasmo & Icoca, every time you use them at the ticket gates or in-store payments, the balance will automatically be displayed on the small screen. So please pay attention, don't forget to fill it up. If you fail to enter and can't ride, you'll be left behind by your fellow travellers.

If you lost your IC: Suica, Pasmo & Icoca, take care of the loss immediately. However, there will be a handling fee.
