My daughter kindly booked a stay at Aldwark Manor for us as a Christmas present, and overall we had a pleasant visit, though there were a few disappointing aspects.
On the positive side, several members of staff were excellent. In particular, James who worked at the bar was friendly and welcoming, Debbie in the breakfast service was attentive and professional, and the cleaning staff did a wonderful job throughout our stay. The dinner was also excellent – the food was fresh, well-prepared, and thoroughly enjoyable.
However, there were some negatives. A considerable amount of building work was being undertaken during our stay, and we were not made aware of this at the time of booking. We also had to pay additional money to secure a quiet room away from the construction work, which was disappointing.
We were especially looking forward to using the spa facilities, but unfortunately were unable to do so. When we checked in, we were told that only one evening slot was available, which made it impractical for us. It seemed that priority was being given to day guests rather than hotel residents. As we were unable to use the spa, we asked if we could at least look around the facilities. Sadly, we were greeted very rudely by the spa manager, Daniel, who could perhaps benefit from additional training in guest relations.
In summary, while the food and several members of staff made our stay enjoyable, the lack of communication about building work and the disappointing spa experience detracted from what should have been a special Christmas gift.
