Since SriLankan Airlines was established in 1979, the flight attendant’s uniform remained unchanged until 2010. At the time, the new uniform was introduced, but it was more like an “upgrade” of the previous uniform design. The female flight attendants wear Sri Lanka’s national dress called Osariya in a turquoise color, while the male flight attendants wear the usual western black suit. The design of their uniforms is based on the patterns of Peacock, which also used for the airline’s livery. To complete the look, the female flight attendants also wear a pair of black high heels.

Even though it was launched in 1979, the journey of SriLankan Airlines had actually started in 1947 when the original Sri Lanka’s flag carrier named Air Ceylon was found. But then the airline’s operations were terminated due to bankruptcy, thus Air Lanka was born. Air Lanka was a state-owned airline. In 1998, Sri Lankan government and Emirates signed an agreement for a ten year strategic partnership. The agreement included right for all aircraft ground handling and airline catering at Bandaranaike International Airport for a ten year period. The government retained a majority stake in the airline at 60%, but they gave full control to Emirates for investments and management decisions. During the same year, Air Lanka was finally rebranded into SriLankan Airlines. Ten years later, when the agreement ended, Emirates said to Sri Lankan Government that it would not renew its management contract. Emirates sold its stake in the SriLankan Airlines to the Government of Sri Lanka in a deal that was finalized in 2010. This officially ended any affiliations between Emirates and SriLankan Airlines. Besides, it turned out that the Sri Lankan Government was seeking greater control over the day-to-day management of the airline. However, after the partnership with Emirates ended, SriLankan Airlines still continued using its re-branded name and logo. Following the ownership transfer, SriLankan Airlines decided to promote Colombo as a hub for flights to Asia. The first destination of the expansion plan was Shanghai, China. On 2012, it was announced that SriLankan Airlines would join as the oneworld® member, on the sidelines of the IATA World Air Transport Summit in Beijing. At the time, Cathay Pacific served Sri Lankan Airlines as its sponsor through its alliance implementation program. The membership implementation itself took approximately 18 months. Finally, SriLankan Airlines officially joined the oneworld® alliance on May 1st, 2014, as the first carrier from the Indian Sub-continent. This oneworld® membership enables SriLankan Airlines to expand its route network. Today, the airline is able to provide convenient connections to its global route network of 100 destinations in 47 countries. During the same year, SriLankan Airlines started to renew and increase its fleet, with purchases of Airbus A330 and A350 models. The airline phased out their last Airbus A340-300 on January 2016 with its last scheduled flight from Chennai to Colombo. In 2016, SriLankan Airlines acquired Mihin Lanka, a low-fare leisure airline also owned by Sri Lankan government. With this acquirement, SriLankan Airlines took Mihin Lanka’s A319-132 aircraft and two units of A321-231 aircraft. Today, SriLankan Airlines operates Mihin Lanka’s 11 flight routes, which include Jakarta, Dhaka, Lahore, Bahrain, Varanasi, Gaya, Madurai, Seychelles, Sharjah, Kolkata, and Gan. Regarding the initial livery of SriLankan Airlines, at first, it featured red stripes on a white fuselage, with the tail being a solid red and supporting the corporate logo, which is a stylized vimana locally known as “dandu monrara”, the flying machine of the mythical king, Ravana. This has been the airline’s livery for nearly two decades, from 1979 to 1998. Right after SriLankan Airlines began a 10-year partnership with Emirates, the livery was changed into a much simpler logo, with an all-white fuselage, covered by blue “SriLankan Airlines” title and a tail adorned with the corporate logo. But, on May 2014, when SriLankan Airlines joined a oneworld® membership, an Airbus A330 in special oneworld® livery was delivered to commemorate the airline’s establishment as the global alliance’s member. The airline currently operates an all-Airbus fleet of 23 modern and sophisticated aircraft, which include Airbus A330-300, Airbus A330-200, Airbus A320/A321, and Airbus A320neo. In addition to its passenger service, SriLankan Airlines also operates several cargo flights to Male, the Middle East, and India, using a McDonnel Douglas MD-80 of FitsAir. Other subsidiaries include domestic air taxi service, catering, engineering, ground handling, and IT services.
