About

Historically, on 1 May 1837, the Skrang Ibans invaded the Jagoi-Bratak Bidayuh settlement on top of Bratak Peak killing over 2,000 Jagoi-Bratak Bidayuh men and taking 1,000 women captive. In 1841 James Brooke, who was then the newly installed White Rajah of Sarawak, was able to rescue some of the women taken captive. Every year on 1 May, descendants of the survivors of the 1837 massacre hold Jagoi-Bratak Day on top of Bratak Peak in Bau in memory of their ancestors. After that, Bau has become a gold mining town. The tribes in the Bau region mainly come from West Kalimantan 700 years ago and have influence of Indonesian and Malaysian culture.

How to Get There

From Kuala Lumpur International Airport, it takes around 1 hour and 40 minutes to Kuching international airport by using flights such as Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia or Malindo Air. After that, once you arrive at the airport, you can take a taxi or rent a car to Bau which consumes another 30 minutes via Bau and Kuching road.

Tourist Attractions

Fairy Cave

Situated around 13 minutes away from Bau town, Fairy Cave is a beautiful limestone cave located west of Bau and near the former gold mining settlement of Bau. It takes its name from a stalagmite structure at the entrance that is said to resemble a Chinese deity. The access to the cave is via a four storey concrete staircase which brings you to the cave entrance. The cave is open from 8.30pm to 4.30pm and admission is free. Most tourists arrange a tour from Kuching covering Fairy Caves and Wind Cave and these tours usually last around 4 hours and cost around RM100 per person including lunch.

Kubah National Park

Kubah is mostly covered by mixed dipterocarp forest, but it also has one of the widest selections of palms and orchids in Borneo. Kubah was established in 1989 because of its exceptionally rich plant life and only opened to the public in 1995. Situated on a small sandstone plateau, this small park boasts crystal clear streams and a host of small waterfalls and bathing pools. The varied wildlife includes bearded pig, mouse deer, black hornbill and many species of amphibians and reptiles. The Park covers an area of 2,230 hectares, and comprises the heavily forested slopes and ridges of the Serapi range. At heights of between 150-450 metres, Kubah national Park has six jungle trails and a path that leads to the summit of Gunung Serapi (5-6 hours return trip). The main Trail passes through dipterocarp forest and links the various trails of the park. The Palmetum is the park’s showcase trail, passing through an area rich in palms whereas the Selang Trail leads to a view point about 45 minute walk and the Waterfall Trail is the most popular trail in the park. It passes through mixed dipterocarp forest and incorporates a number of plank walk sections that cross streams and swampy land.
