According to the story of the elders in this area, this town was named Durian Tunggal because in the past there was a clan who lived at the end of the village. The young man lives alone and in his home there is a durian tree. Durian Tunggal is a mukim located in Alor Gajah area, Melaka located around 3 kilometres from Ayer Keroh toll and there is a main water reservoir situated from the town of Durian Tunggal to Selandar, Jasin. The Durian Tunggal Dam was built in 1974 and was fully completed in 1976. Melaka had suffered the worst water crisis in its history in 1991 when the Durian Tunggal Dam had suffered the downfall of Malacca's water supply and was dry in a long drought. The crisis has been resolved in the short run by constructing a reservoir pond to pump to the Durian Tunggal Dam. The Muar-Melaka river water distribution project was completed in 1993 and this project has completed measures to overcome the water crisis and to ensure long-term water supply in Melaka. Now, the Durian Tunggal Dam has a water level of 54.8 percent. Currently, Durian Tunggal town has changed from a cowboy to the modern town.

How to Get There

By Car

It takes approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes to reach Durian Tunggal from Kuala Lumpur city centre by using North- South highway. Visitors from Johor Bahru can also use North- South highway to Durian Tunggal which takes longer time around 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Jonker Street

Jalan Hang Jebat, or Jonker Street is a street in the historical Chinatown of Melaka across the river from the Dutch Square. Jonker Walk is flanked on both sides of the road with heritage houses which was built from the 17th century. Baba and Nyonyas which is also known as Peranakans, descendants of 15th to 16th century Chinese immigrants here were known marrying local Malay women lived and operate their business back then and there are still traces of history on them in Malacca. Now, the street houses turn into many shops selling antiques, textiles, handicrafts and souvenirs. The street is closed off for traffic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the evening and shops open until 12 midnight. This street is very popular among local and international tourists selling things such as food, hats, electronics, ice creams, beverages, children stuff and many more.

Melaka Islamic Museum

The Islamic Museum of Melaka is strategically located at centre of Malacca and very near to the Malacca Sultanate Palace which is a replica of palace during the Malay Sultanate. The best way to get to the Islamic Museum of Malacca is via taxi or by driving here yourself. The Islamic Museum of Malacca was built to exhibit documents and artifacts on Islam religion as well as a centre to research on how Islam came to Malacca and the spreading of Islam to the entire country. In addition, this museum acts to encourage a greater understanding on Islamic knowledge and be a resource centre for researchers and scholars studying the history of Melaka and Islam as well as to show the role Melaka's ancient links with other centres of Islamic civilization in places such as India, China, Arabia and other parts of Southeast Asia.The fee to enter the museum is RM1 per adult and RM0.50 per child and opens daily from 9am to 5.30pm.
