About

Sibu Island is a group of small islands which is placed under the jurisdiction of Mersing district, Johor, Malaysia. It is made up of several islands such as Sibu Besar Island, Sibu Tengah Island, Sibu Kukus Island and Sibu Hujung Island. The main island, Sibu Besar Island, is only 6 kilometres long and one kilometres wide with most of the area being covered with forest. However this is the only inhabited island with a small fishing village that houses up to 40 families which is located on the southern end of the island. Being sanctioned as a marine park back in 1993, like other islands in Malaysia, Sibu Island too is a great spot for diving and snorkeling with an abundance of well-preserved coral reefs. What makes the island unique is the presence of well-carved sea caves – there are a lot of them around the island. In addition to that, the abundance of tropical vegetation allows visitors to go for a hike through the jungle that would lead to mangrove swamps that are untouched by human development. There are also shipwrecks off the island coast which be seen from afar. Historically, Chinese junks had exchanged fire with the pirate vessels around the island’s waters. Therefore, the remains can be seen scattered till this day. The island is closed from visitors during the monsoon season.

How to Get There

By Car

People driving from Kuala Lumpur may drive via North-South Highway/E2 for immediate access to Tanjung Leman jetty terminal. The journey could take up around 5 hours depending on the traffic situation.

By Bus

There is no major bus terminal, instead guests can opt to stop by the Kota Tinggi district which has the bus stop. Take the trip directly to Kota Tinggi from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) terminal using express bus services such as Transnasional Express before opting for taxi to go to the jetty.

Tourist Attractions

Kampung Duku

Kampung Duku or literally translated as Duku Village is the only settlement in Sibu Island. It is a fishing village with the residents all working as fishermen, farmers and tourist guides. The houses here are built in wood on stilts with a strong traditional Malay style. Despite the isolation from the city and development, there are also some government buildings such as police station, clinic, community hall, a mosque and a school. Upon coming here, visitors are introduced with the locals’ way of living and have the chance to mingle with the villagers and understand their culture and practices.

Tanjung Leman

Tanjung Leman is a small town which is administered by the district of Mersing. This town is the one-stop centre for most of the visitors that intend to go to Sibu Island, considering the close proximity of the town’s jetty to the island. There are some small villages and FELDA residences providing homestay services for visitors waiting to go to Sibu Island the day after. The town too has its own beach, Tanjung Leman Beach, which is popular among the locals and is perfect for visitors to get a glimpse of what is to be offered by Sibu Island.
