Since the 1960s, Padang Besar has become a popular shopping paradise for Malaysian and Thai visitors. It is bordered by the Songkhla Province, Thailand. It is located 35 km North to Kangar. This place, Padang Besar is located opposite a city in Thailand which is called Siam Town by the local community. Padang Besar offers a wide range of products such as textiles, shoes, clothes, food, iron items and many more. Opening hours for this market are from 9 am to 6 pm. Padang Besar has the only direct rail link between Malaysia and Thailand. It also has a crossroads between the two countries. Apart from shopping, other activities in Perlis attracts people from outside and within the country. There are nearby attractions such as Gua Kelam, a limestone cave and Chuping, the largest sugarcane field. There are also Perlis State Park and Lake Timah-Tasoh.ย 

How to Get There

By Flight

The nearest airport to Padang Besar Market is located in Alor Setar, and you can travel to the Padang Besar Market for one hour and 30 minutes by using the North-South Expressway.ย 

By Car

From Kuala Lumpur city centre, it takes about 8 hours of driving by using the North-South Expressway and take the exit in Jitra and followed by Kodiang and then Kangar to get to Padang Besar Market.ย

Kota Kayang Museum

The Kota Kayang Museum is located near Bukit Kayang in Kuala Perlis. Spread over 4.84 hectares, this museum is owned by Syed Salim as a gift from the King Syed Alwi. At the end of the 19th century, Syed Salim built his home and stayed with his family until they were sold to the state government. The building also became the official residence of the British Advisor, Military Administration until 1954 and became the official residence of the Chief Minister after independence. In 1991, the building was demolished and rebuilt and converted into a museum. The museum consists of Islamic artefacts, Perlis or Kedah crafts and treasures belongs to the royal family. The main gallery is a public gallery that chronologizes the building of the Fort Kayang and daily equipment of the Perlis aristocrats. An archaeological gallery here exhibits research on Kota Kayang and other parts of Perlis. While, the Perlis or Kedah gallery exhibits the royal family tree, golden flower replica, colonialism effects and other interesting collections. Entry is free, and the visitor can visit from 9 am to 5 pm daily except for Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji holidays.ย 

Gua Kelam

This cave is a limestone cave which is a unique treasure of Perlis and Malaysia. It has about 370 metres long. It is a limestone cave which famous for its โ€˜walking caveโ€™ activity. A hollow limestone path is believed to be the idea of one English people to convert this cave to transport tin ore from a mine near the entrance of the river from Kaki Bukit. It is also a favourite cave for adventure seekers. You will enter the cave from one end of the cave and exit at a different location. The only way in is through an 8-feet wide wooden hanging bridge. Currently, the walking path is illuminated by the bright light, and you can still find the mine's operations in the cave. You can hear the sound of bats and water drops from the stalactites.ย
