I was amazed at the atmosphere of peranakan and colonial. Service was good and nice view. I think I will comeback again.

Good for a night
It was a very old hotel with old facilities. Our room was big enough to accommodate the entire family. Toiletries were just the basic. It was very near a Hawker place where we had dinner. Breakfast in the hotel was not good at all, with only limited food choices and poor service. Also, the receptionist forgot to endorse our transportation request to the one on duty the following day. Glad we only stayed for a night.

Quaint & Old-world
My wife & I were attracted to the quaintness of the frontage in the photograph when we searched for a reasonable hotel to stay in Georgetown last month. Reading on the web that it had a reputation of being haunted added to the appeal. For the price we paid, we were not disappointed. The building itself reminds me of the old British military barracks left on Dempsey Hill back home. Understanding that the structure was built in 1926 (and we have a picture of the gable with the date to prove it) one does not expect a modern posh 5-star hotel. At least the rooms were adequate, clean and sound-proof. The air-conditioning and bathroom fittings appear to have been newly installed. The water heater was very comfortable. Although the drainage scupper in the shower seemed like a trap if stepped upon. The rooms were well cleaned daily and clean, fresh linen and bottled water provided, although the bath towels were just about the right size for us Asians - imagine a XXL Caucasian struggling to wrap it around. Also face towels would have been nice. Other than that coffee/tea making facilities were welcome, but bring your own mixes if particular. My pet peeve was with the TV channels provided. With only 'free-to-air' TV (no cable) the choices were Malay or Chinese with only occasional News in English. The pool was welcome after a day's sight-seeing, albeit a little small. Pool towels have to be signed out at the front reception. Well, what does one expect for 3-stars. At least the staff were friendly and helpful. The best feature of this hotel is its location - within walking distance to eating places such as the (famous?) Green House Restaurant (er coffeeshop) and several Penang Tambun bakeries. Bus #103 takes you to Gurney Drive & newly built Gurney Plaza in 15 minutes - only RM1.40! Although the way back is a little more complicated as Georgetown traffic seems almost all one-way. So the 10-minute taxi ride cost us RM15.

Great potential but....
From the outside it looks like a great colonial hotel but that's where it ends. The place is in dire need of repair and refurbishment. The lobby is a good place to start by getting rid of the old chunky looking sofas. The rooms are very basic and the breakfast was very poor.

OK place to stay, the swimming pool saved it from 1 or 2 stars
Stayed at the 1926 Heritage Hotel for four nights with my girlfriend whilst we visited Penang for the first time. I chose this place as we wanted a place with a pool, but we did not want to pay loads. And you pay what you get. This hotel has charm. It is old and dated and I am sure was great back in its day, but it needs a refurbishment. Walking down the hallway on the second floor to our room reminded me of a horror movie (like The Shining) and the creaky floors didn't help with that image in my head. The room was adequate and I appreciate that the room was cleaned everyday and we got two water bottles which helped us when we went out on our day trips. The WiFi is free as they say, but at least for my phone and occasionally my girlfriend's phone, we could not receive any internet connection in our room. I am not the one who will be on my phone the whole time, but planning the next day activities from your room would be more comfortable than the breakfast room where I could only get internet. Talking about breakfast, it is simple, but at least there was breakfast as I know these days you can get cheap rates just for room only. Eggs were good and toast and jam were the safe options. The hotel is well-located on a main road in Penang, but still far from the central areas like the heritage sites. Still, it's not a bad walk - 15-20 minutes and you'll be there. The saviour of the hotel was the pool. Although, simple with water jets shooting out water into the pool, it was nice to have after a long hot day. It made this stay in this hotel bearable. Would I recommend staying here? I don't know really depends on you and your situation. Overall, the staff were good and friendly and there is nothing wrong with them. It's just the building itself, but my girlfriend thought it had character and history, which I can agree.

A Good Place to Stay!”
We enjoyed our stay at 1926 Heritage Hotel. Our ground-floor deluxe room was spacious, with ensuite, fridge, and a balcony. The pool is large enough for a ‘proper’ swim and the staff were very helpful, readily providing pool towels. We had a couple of minor problems in the room and maintenance were there very fast to fix them. Breakfast (included) was plentiful with a choice of Malaysian or Western-style – it was tasty, but unfortunately most food was COLD as the burners were not on underneath the pans. There are two restaurants on site – maybe the reason for the sign prohibiting “outside food”. We didn’t intend to have outside food anyway, but as a result of the sign vowed not to eat in either restaurant. We travel a lot, and it’s more the norm to find takeaway menus in the room! There are two excellent Malaysian style eateries just around the corner anyway in Jalan Burma, Burmah Food Paradise and Old Green House. Thirty seconds later, there’s a 7-11. There’s also a good Japanese Restaurant just nearby (Isaribi), at the continuation of Jalan Imegresen across the road (Jalan Chow Thye). We walked everywhere – 10-15 minutes to Paradise Plaza (including Giant Supermarket). Thirty minutes or so walk depending where you’re going in Georgetown. We’d definitely stay again!
