One of the major towns in the state of Penang, Bukit Mertajam was named after Mertajam, Erioglossum rubiginosum, a tree with white flowers that can reach a height of 5-12 meters. Back then, this place was a farming settlement inhabited mainly by Chinese of Teochew and Hakka descent and today, rapid development can be seen at Bukit Mertajam due to major urbanization process. It is located about 336 km north of Kuala Lumpur.
One may drive via the North-South highway and take an exit at Bukit Mertajam interchange. The drive usually takes approximately 4 hours, depending on current traffic. If you plan to travel by bus, head down to Terminal Bas Bersepadu (TBS) to find frequent trips to Bukit Mertajam from Kuala Lumpur.
