About

One of the major towns in the state of Penang, Bukit Mertajam was named after Mertajam, Erioglossum rubiginosum, a tree with white flowers that can reach a height of 5-12 meters. Back then, this place was a farming settlement inhabited mainly by Chinese of Teochew and Hakka descent and today, rapid development can be seen at Bukit Mertajam due to major urbanization process. It is located about 336 km north of Kuala Lumpur.

How to Get There

By Car/Bus

One may drive via the North-South highway and take an exit at Bukit Mertajam interchange. The drive usually takes approximately 4 hours, depending on current traffic. If you plan to travel by bus, head down to Terminal Bas Bersepadu (TBS) to find frequent trips to Bukit Mertajam from Kuala Lumpur.

By Train

You may board a train to Bukit Mertajam with the Electric Train Service (ETS) ticket fare for RM58 (gold class) and RM77 (platinum class).

By Plane

To reach Bukit Mertajam by air, one needs to arrive at the nearest airport, Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas before taking another on-ground transfer to reach the town.

Juru Auto City

Endorsed as a tourist destination by the Penang State Government, Juru Auto City is one-stop centre for auto, food, entertainment, banking, shopping, and outdoor events/celebrations. It is located 1 km from the Juru Toll and 5.5 km from the Penang Bridge.

St Anne’s Church

This church attracts over 100,000 pilgrims from Malaysia as well as neighbouring countries like Singapore, Thailand and Australia during the annual celebration of the feast of St Anne which lasts for ten days. Founded in 1846, the first chapel was built on top of the hill. Today, St. Anne's Church administers a couple of chapels, namely Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows in Alma, and Chapel of Our Lady of Fatima in Berapit.

Cherok Tokun Nature Park (Tokun Hill)

Known among the locals as a regular place for hiking, you will have to pass a small Malay town prior reaching the foot of the hill. If you plan to hike, there are two options to choose; a tarred road or a jungle track. A great place to embrace the nature, visitors are advised to wear suitable clothes.
