Chukai is known by the name of Kemaman City where it is the city and capital of Kemaman District and as administrative center of Kemaman, Terengganu. It is a city bordering the state of Pahang and has a population over 100 000 thousand people. The town named due to its position near the estuary of the Kemaman River, whereby taxes and levies were imposed on riverine traffic, especially during the British colonial period. At that time, the city was a river port involved in import and export trade. Chukai is the biggest town in southern Terengganu and the location is between the state capitals of Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu as well as near to the oil town of Kerteh that has revolved Chukai into a major commercial hub for the region.
You can board Malaysia Airlines or budget airlines such as Firefly to the Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport Kuantan. From there you can take taxi or shuttle to reach Chukai where the journey is only 1 hour drive from airport.
If you travel from Kuantan town, follow signboards to Kemaman which will bring you past Beserah and Balok. If you are travel from Kuala Lumpur on the East Coast Expressway , you can completely bypass Kuantan and head straight to Chukai via Cherating road. If you travel from From Johor Bharu or Singapore, take the North-South Highway to Yong Peng. Then take Highway 1 to Labis and onto Segamat. Follow through Kuantan and follow Coastal Highway 3 to reach Chukai.
You can board direct Transnasional bus from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) Kuala Lumpur to Kemaman Bus Station. The journey takes approximately 4 to 5 hours’ drive away. From Kemaman Bus Station you can take local bus or taxi to Chukai Town.
The Sungai Yak Yah Firefly Sanctuary is the biggest firefly sanctuary in Malaysia. It is located about 11km from the town of Chukai in Kemaman. Visitors are taken on a boat ride through the river and the boat ride is conducted in the evenings usually from 8 pm to 12 pm, best on moonlit nights.
Bakau Tinggi Recreational Park is one of the main attractions that you can visit during your stay at Chukai. There are species in their natural habitat such as crabs, fishes, monitor lizards and sea otters.
