Desaru is a peaceful coastal area and resort in the district of Kota Tinggi, Johor Darul Takzim. In 1980s, Desaru was overvalued with a few abandoned mega projects intended to attract visitors and foreign investments. However, after a certain period of neglect, Desaru’s beaches are now among the finest in Johor. The clean beaches are fringed with shady Casuarinas and stretched 25 kilometres long. Similar to all of Malaysia’s east coast, Desaru is extremely seasonal with monsoon winds and rains pouring the coast between November to February. The good season to soothe your stress would be somewhere in April to October. With inviting weather, visitors can relish interesting activities like boating, swimming, fishing as well as other outdoor activities.
To get to the destination, you can travel in your own car along the Senai-Desaru Expressway which is only an hour from the capital city of Johor. If you prefer to sit back and relax, you can hop on a bus from Larkin Bus Terminal in Johor Bahru to Kota Tinggi. The frequency of the buses are between 15 minutes to 90 minutes. So, worry not if you are a last minute traveller. You can also take a cab from Kota Tinggi directly to Desaru. If you are travelling from Singapore, you can take a ferry from Changi Ferry Terminal to Tanjong Belungkor Ferry Terminal in Belungkor, Johor.
Have you ever experienced seeing fireflies flying and twinkling around you? If not, this is the best opportunity for you. To get to Sungei Lebam river, you have to be prepared for an adventurous trip into the jungle. It is advisable for you to not dress up fancily for the trip as it would require bumping about muddy roads and cruising around the pitch-black jungle river. It is best for you to join one of the hotel excursions for better experience. To be able to see amazing twinkling fireflies, be sure to visit after rain on a new moon.
