Medan Tuanku is a major area located in the downtown of the capital of Kuala Lumpur city, Malaysia. The main roads that made up this area include Jalan Medan Tuanku and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman which is usually crowded during festive seasons such as the fasting month of Ramadhan with people flocking by to purchase items and goods for preparations to celebrate Eid Fitri. To the north, it borders Chow Kit and to the east, it borders Dang Wangi. In addition to its own attractions such as Maju Junction and Quill City Mall shopping centres, Medan Tuanku is also pretty close to most of the major attractions in Kuala Lumpur. Medan Tuanku is placed under the administration of Kuala Lumpur City Hall, which is similar to other areas within the Kuala Lumpur metropolitan.

How to Get There

By Car

People driving from Kuala Lumpur may drive via Route 1 for immediate access to Medan Tuanku. The journey could take up around 10 minutes depending on the traffic.

By Train

The only train providing direct access to Medan Tuanku is the monorail line to Medan Tuanku station. From the centralized KL Sentral station, take the monorail train directly to Medan Tuanku station before opting for taxi or ride-hailing services to go around the area.

Kuala Lumpur Tower

Kuala Lumpur Tower or KL Tower in short is a communications tower which is located 2.4 kilometres away from Medan Tuanku. The protruding antenna becomes its main feature, extending the height of the tower up to 421 metres, while the pod roof is situated at 335 metres. The upper area has a dining place which revolves around, accessible via an elevator and stairwell going all the way down from the pod. It is inaugurated in 1 October 1996 by the Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the Prime Minister back then. In present, the tower also included free-to-air terrestrial television services broadcast from Media Prima and expanding its digital broadcasting capabilities.

Dataran Merdeka

Another interesting place for go around when visitors are in Medan Tuanku is definitely the Dataran Merdeka, a square located in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad building, a historical building located in Jalan Raja. Literally known as the Independence Square, it was formally known as the Selangor Club Padang. Being the common venue for the National Day Parade, this square is where the Union flag is brought down in a historic moment that marked the birth of the country. Among the main features here are a 95-metre tall flagpole, one of the tallest in the world, as well as a fountain known as Cop’s Fountain which was built in 1897 as a memorial to Steve Harper, a popular police inspector back then.

Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Memorial

It feels incomplete to talk about Medan Tuanku without mentioning the Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Memorial. This memorial houses a massive collection of some of the items, documents & history related to the country’s first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah II. Here, the visitors can come over and have a closer look on and contemplating the life of the premier by themselves. Entrance is free and it is open to the public from 9 am to 5 pm daily except Mondays.
