Muar is a historical town and the capital of Muar District, Johor, Malaysia. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Malaysia to be visited and explored for its food, coffee and historical buildings from the pre-war. The alternative name to it is Bandar Maharani. It is declared the Royal City of Johor by Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar and is the fourth largest city in Johor. It is the main and biggest town of the bigger entity region or area of the same name, Muar which is sub-divided into the Muar district and the new Ledang district. Muar is rich in history as mentioned which was upgraded into in many historical records and archaeological works. Historically, in 1361, it was claimed that Muar was a part of the Majapahit Empire. Another account also stated that Parameswara, upon his exile from Temasik before proceeding to found Melaka, had established a settlement at Kota Buruk, Pagoh, Ulu Muar, Muar witnessing the beginning of the Malacca Sultanate Empire.
Muar played a role in resisting the Portuguese occupation of Malacca during the Portuguese's Afonso de Albuquerque invasion and attack. Besides that, Muar is also internationally well known as the hub of the furniture industry of Malaysia. Industrial estates within Muar district are located at Tanjung Agas, Bukit Bakri, Jorak, Parit Bakar, Pagoh and Tangkak. There are notably three big factories of multinational companies such as STMicroelectronics, Micron Technology and Pioneer Corporation at Tanjung Agas. Muar has a population of 437,164 as in 2007 with a multiracial demography, consists of mainly Malay, Chinese, Indian etc. Beside the local languages like Malays, Chinese (Mandarin and other dialects Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese) and Tamil, English is widely understood and spoken.
Muar is also accessible via the North–South Expressway through the Tangkak and Pagoh interchanges exits which are located 20 kilometres and 30 kilometres from the town respectively. It takes usually 2 hours and 15 minutes to reach Muar and you can also exit at Ayer Keroh, Melaka and continue your journey by passing Merlimau and Sungai Rambai town.
Tanjung Emas Recreational Park is facing the Muar River and offers many adventures for those seeking to get close to nature and have some family fun. There is the whole park to explore and a popular weekend spot as the park also houses the 9-hole Tanjung Emas Golf Club for golf lover. If a riverine adventure is your flavour, a 45-minute to one hour Muar River Cruise departs from the park, offering tourists a tour of Muar town on the river. Nearby is Tanjung Ketapang, just next to Tanjung Emas which faces the international shipping lane of the Malacca Straits. The stretch of mangrove along the promontory’s coast is home to a friendly bunch of wild macaques. For dining options, there is a food court offering local delicacies. The famous local dishes is Ikan Asam Pedas (fish cooked with tamarind sauce and chilli paste), which is Muar’s famous signature dish. Besides that, there is also the widely known Mee Bandung Muar and Bihun Sup which are also popular among locals here.
Heng Chiang Hwee, the creator of Don Hu Jurassic Park, opened this unique attraction to the public two months ago. He decorates his own nursery company's garden with custom-made dinosaur statues from China. Formerly known as Don Hu Nursery at Jalan Pintasan Muar, this park has attracted many children and until now, the park has 12 dinosaur statues including Tyrannosaurus Rex species and three more statues will be installed next month. There is a plan to extend the Jurassic Park park by providing recreation areas for children, antique exhibits and farm and ducks in the 5.6 hectare land. The park is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday and public holidays from 8am to 8pm.
