Taiping is a town in the district of Larut Matang and Selama in the state of Perak, Malaysia. It is around 48 kilometers from the state capital, Ipoh and 78 kilometers from the George Town in Pulau Penang. It is actually the second biggest city in Perak right after Ipoh. Taiping is actually the wettest town in Peninsular, as it receives the most rain in the Peninsular Malaysia. The average annual rainfall is about 4,000mm in Taiping while the peninsula's average is 2,000mm – 2,500mm. Its unusual rainfall has also led to a fertile collection of flora and century-old rain trees in the Taiping Lake Gardens.
Taiping actually got its name from two Chinese characters ‘tai’ which means 'great' and ‘ping’ which means 'peace'. In 19th century, due to the discovery of tin mine in the area, it has attracted settlers from China. In 1875, the British has made Taiping the administrative center for the state of Perak however in 1937 the function was moved to Ipoh.
The locals use Bahasa Melayu as a form of communication. It is the first language and is widely used. However the locals may have a dialect in the language. Taiping can be accessible using the North – South Expressway Northern Route. From Kuala Lumpur, visitors may head north towards Ipoh. Once on the highway, visitors may take the exit number 146 - Cgkt. Jering/Taiping/Beruas. The distance is around 266.6 kilometers with the driving time of 2 hours 44 minutes.
From Puduraya Bus Station, visitors can get bus tickets from all sorts of bus companies to head to Ipoh. Some of them are Plusliner, Transnasional and Sri Maju. There are a lot of buses that make trips almost every hour. The fare on the other hand is around RM35 per way. Then visitors may take the local bus and head to Taiping. The fare will be less than RM5.
Another alternative to go to Taiping would be via train. From KL Central, one may take the train to Ipoh. Currently the trains towards Taiping are all using electricity. It takes the same amount of time as a bus or a car that heads to Taiping. The fare is around RM40 per way. It will stop directly in the city of Taiping.
