Oh dear!
This is a disaster of a hotel! You may find a leaflet showing the garden and this does look quite charming; and while this historical hotel is many things, charming isn't one of them. Once a hillside retreat from the heat of Penang during an era when basic, hard beds and scant décor were acceptable, this hotel can't even boast faded charm. Poorly maintained with poorly trained staff and no restaurant "to-speak-of", it is the only hotel on the hill. If you're a tourist, it's worth making an effort to look at the black and white photo collection on the walls to see Penang during a bygone era. Other than that, you would be better off going to the food court! At least there, you can see what you're going to eat.... It's such a shame because the Bellevue is now the only hotel on Penang hill, the other one having closed down many years ago and crumbling to ruins. Sadly, the days of of the Bellevue may be numbered due to poor management. Do go and see the photos though - if you're there already!

Great Location but Pricey
Stayed overnight for night over last weekend-stayed in Room10. You will have to lug your luggage all by yourself all the way from the upper station once you get off the funicular train - and lug it yourself to the hotel - slightly uphill. As another reviewer also mentioned in his own experience -I too arrived at the hotel -sweating, slightly out of breath, lugging a roller bag and a knapsack; and coughing - in light drizzling conditions. My earlier phone call to the hotel 2 hours earlier - to ask if anyone from the hotel could help with the luggage --when I arrive at the upper station- was met with a negative answer. Anyway -so I arrived - in the state I described above. Pleasant and very cosy upstairs room. Wifi was OK. Heater was faulty -which I discovered only after I had gone into the shower in the evening. Had a bath in very cold chilly water. Seems the heater fault was due to lightning earlier in the day - however it was only picked up by me at 7pm somehow - I informed the front desk that heater was not working, By the next morning/ very late at night -it was later on fixed.. I received apologies for it and 2 complimentary meals at the cafetaria - dinner and breakfast because of the faulty heater. Service was overall - average - though Mr Zul at the front counter was exceptionally kind to look for a plastic raincoat for me as I wanted to go walking in the light drizzle. Food at the cafetaria was average but I must say the spring rolls were really nice, Bathroom at my standard room was basic. The room walls are thin and outside corridor chatter and nearby room chatter was clearly audible till maybe 2am. I managed to sleep at 3 am. Overall - despite the shortcomings and a very cold evening bath - I nonetheless had a pleasant overnight stay and staff were kind and apologetic.

Delightful, chill terrace cafe that has a spectacular view of Georgetown
This review is on the terrace cafe of the hotel, not the hotel accommodations. The terrace commands a spectacular view of Georgetown, other parts of Penang, the sea/straits separating Penang from mainland Malaysia, & parts of the mainland. The terrace and its garden is verdant, refreshing, with a touch of olde world charm. Have a meal here, or tea, or a beer. Bring a book to read. Great place to chill. For food, there is a range of Asian & Western, including local Penang signature classics: (1) Inchi Kabin (marinated deep-fried chicken) taken with worcestershire sauce; (2) Curry (or Kari) Kapitan (spicy, fragrant curry); (3) Prawn Fritters (a local Hainanese cuisine classic) with tartare sauce.

Major Rundown
Visited Bukit Bendera on 21 April 2017, to celebrate my birthday. Fortunately I didn't book this hotel. We entered the small area to see the peacocks in caged area. For me, nothing special to see and not worth to go. After that, we continue to see the hotel at the back of the small farm. It was under renovation. However one f the worker showed us we still can have a nice view from the hotel terrace. I passed by one notice on the table which mentioned BEWARE OF ALIVE PIT VIPER!!!.. I was really shocked as I thought it just a joke. I asked again to another worker and they replied yes..he also showed me the viper just on top of my head.. So, whoever didn't like any slimey and poisonous things, please, it's not worth a visit to this hotel. I would suggest you can have your nice lunch and view at David Brown Restaurant.

Fantastic views over Georgetown. We stopped here for a cup of tea and a sandwich when it was raining. The food and the tea were fine & not expensive. But this hotel looks like it's in serious need of a renovation or update.
