Besut is a district in the north of Terengganu. It is bordering Kelantan to the north and to the west of South China Sea. Many would go to Terengganu through Besut therefore it is considered as the gateway into Terengganu. Jerteh is the district capital with it being the most developed. Kampung Raja on the other hand is the Administration Centre of the Besut District. There is no written history of how Besut got its name however there are only verbal stories from the older folks. It was said the name Besut came about from the leader of an aborigine.
The citizens of Besut district are Malay in majority however there are also Chinese ethnicity as well as Siamese. The people in Besut speak Malay however their language has a dialect to it. It is more towards the Kelantanese dialect instead of the Terengganu dialect. Therefore the people of Besut identify more as a Kelantanese than Terengganu due to the location they are at and also the dialect they speak. Even the non-Malay there speaks Malay and is fluent in it.
Currently, the people of Besut would work their paddy field, palm oil, rubber and many more. They also go into business with the produce that they are able to harvest.
One can take a local flight such as Air Asia or Malaysia Airlines and Firefly and fly to Kota Bharu which is nearer to Besut instead of Kuala Terengganu. There will be plenty of taxis waiting outside the airport to get the visitors to their hotels. The journey will take around 1 hour and 10 minutes.
From Kuala Lumpur, tourists may drive south using Kuala Lumpur - Gua Musang/E33 Expressway. They should take the exit towards Kuala Krai Expressway first then make their way on to East – West Expressway. There will be directions from here on towards Besut. It will take around 6 hours and 45 minutes to reach Besut. The distance is around 439 kilometers.
There are plenty of buses that go to Kota Bharu. Some of them are Transnasional and Plusliner. Then from there, tourists will need to take a local bus to get to Besut or it may stop at Jerteh since it is the capital district of Besut.
Lata Tembakah Forest is located in Jertih. It is around 24 kilometres from the city of Jertih. Lata Tembakah Forest is located within Pelagat Reserve Forest. This forest is opened from 8 am to 5 pm. It has facilities such as chalet, camping site, suspended bridge and also information counter to make sure those who came would have a designated place to go to in case of emergency. Visitors may spend the night camping but the authorities need to be informed beforehand.
This natural hot spring is located 28 kilometer away from the city of Jerteh. Visitors can witness beforehand where the source of the hot water and how it flows into the designated pool. The water has Sulphuric elements and the water can go up to 49 degree Celsius. Therefore it is good for medicinal purposes for those who take a dip there.
As for a luxury hotel or resort, the best that can be found would be Bubu Resort locate on Pulau Perhentian Kecil itself. This is a four star resort on Long Beach. This resort is located to many public facilities on the island. It offers great comfort as well. Many guests who stayed there commended on their service. Being on an island, they offer services for the water activity such as snorkeling, island hoping as well as kayaking. Therefore their guests do not need to look for these services with other providers.
