Hulu Terengganu is the largest district of Terengganu, Malaysia. It covers up to 3,874.63 km2 with the total reported population is 70,800 in 2010. It was inhabited by majority Malays, followed by Chinese and Indians. Most of the people here are farmers. But now many are turning towards becoming a dealer as Terengganu is famous for its local dishes, islands and beaches, textiles and many more. It also resided by the indigenous people for it has one village of Orang Asli in Kampung Sungai Berua. The local government of this district is Hulu Terengganu District Council. The central government is run in Kuala Berang, which is 40 minutes away driving from the capital state of Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu. A few development has been shown by Kuala Berang to illustrate Hulu Terengganu is not the same as the other headwaters (hulu) elsewhere because the headwaters (hulu) are usually known as the isolation of the area. A large area of the district is still occupied by the forest yet, the district is very popular for it houses the attractive Kenyir Lake.

How to Get There

By bus

From Kuala Lumpur, you can get your bus ticket and depart at Integrated South Terminal (TBS) straight to Kuala Berang. The journey will be about six hours. From the bus terminal, get a taxi to take you to your destination in Hulu Terengganu.

By flight

From Subang Airport or KLIA2, get a domestic flight to Kuala Terrenganu. From the airport, you will have to take a taxi to reach Hulu Terengganu.

Kenyir Lake

Kenyir Lake is the largest man-made lake in South East Asia which covers up an area of 260,000 hectares. It was formed in 1985 by the damming of the Kenyir River. Before that, it was firstly formed due to a worst flood on a fertile and beautiful settlement area in Hulu Terengganu. It borders Kelantan in its west and Pahang in its south. In Pahang side, it serves as a gateway to Taman Negara. This huge lake contains 340 small islands, due to the hilly topography of the area, waterfalls and rapids. Since it functions as reservoir, the water level can go up and down depending on the month and weather thus it is said to be most beautiful during the water level rises the highest. This man-made lake becomes a home to numerous species of freshwater flora and fauna. As time goes by, Kenyir Lake has been successfully developed for eco-tourism, and there are many resorts on its shores offering activities for nature lovers. Among the popular water activities that can be enjoyed here are Kayaking, canoeing, boating, rafting and a few more.
