Sungai Siput is a town in Kuala Kangsar District, Perak, Malaysia. The town is located roughly 25km from Ipoh, the state capital and about 20km from royal town of Kuala Kangsar. Sg Siput, a small subdivision of Kuala Kangsar District. Located just 21 kilometres from the Royal town of Kuala Kangsar, Perak, this mukim is made up of 61% of its district total area. This place obtained its name from Malay settlers where they found a river that was filled with snails thus naming the place Sungai (river) Siput (snails).
Though this place was a small quiet town, it had witnessed a significant event in the history of Malaya. In the year 1948, three British nationals, two managers and one assistant of two rubber plantations were shot dead by the communists, from the Communist Party of Malaya (CMP). This caused the British High Commissioner in Malaya at that time, Sir Edward Gent, to declare a state of emergency, now known as the Malayan Emergency. The first couple of days, the state of emergency was only applied to Perak and Johor before it was expanded to the whole Malaya. The state of emergency only ended twelve years later.
To get to Sg Siput, one can drive up from Kuala Lumpur, two and half hour trip via the North-South Highway. For those who prefer less driving time, and looking back for a trip that you can sit back and relax, there are few options for that. One of them is flying in to Perak’s airport, the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport directly. This, however, 50 minutes of driving is required to get to Sg Siput from the airport. Another option is to get on a express bus at the price of less than RM 30.
This is a farm that’s established by the Animal Service Department of Perak in 1972. Located just a little less than six kilometre from Sg Siput, this farm’s main objectives are to give out training and teach in farming and taking care of livestock. This also include on how to make their food.
At this farm, they covered from cows to goats to even deer and ostriches. Visitors will be given a talk on how the farm works from A to Z and even have a chance to get some of the freshest goat’s milk.
The royal mosque of Perak is just half an hour drive from Sg Siput. Built back in 1913, this mosque was vowed made by the then-Sultan as thanksgiving to Allah SWT when he cured from an illness. The mosque was completed with the price tag of RM 200,000, a staggering amount of money back in those days.
The mosque was designed by Arthur B. Hubback, the same architect that designed the Ipoh and Kuala Lumpuar’s railway station with the style of Indo-Saracenic style. The Ubudiah mosque’s design is unique and one can easily recognise it from all over the Malalysia.
Situated inside an old residence place of the Perak Sultan, Sultan Idris Shah 1, this gallery was opened on 9th December 2003. The building, the Ulu Palace, was made from woods carvings that inspired by faunas found in surrounding regions. The architecture of the building design also shares some common features from the National Palace in KL, Ipoh High Court and Ipoh railway station.
The gallery is only twenty-five minutes’ drive from Sg Siput and here you can find the history, memorabilia and personal belongings of Sultan Perak. Also, in separate building, there are showcases of state cars and patrol cars used in Sultan Azlan Shah’s travel.
Who doesn’t like a nice soak into a hot spring? This hot spring is a destination that is a must when one visits Perak. Situated slight farther down under, the one and half hour drive via North-South Highway is going to be worth it. The park was officially opened back in 2003 and until this day, is one of the best managed hot springs there are in Malaysia. The hot spring is located at the foothill of the Titiwangsa Mountain Range.
