Elegance & Attention to Detail
This is a gorgeous place. Soaring ceilings, tasteful antiques and furniture within the public areas and bedroom suites create a beautiful atmosphere of calm, refined elegance. The capacious bedroom suite was fabulous to walk into after the busyness of Georgetown. The bed, romantically swathed in white muslin was firm but surprisingly comfortable. Our sweet balcony amidst the treetops looked over the pool and provided a perfect spot to read. Loved the bathroom with its smart black and white tiles too. Breakfast served at tables at the first floor or outside was delicious. The owners and staff are knowledgeable, friendly and go out of their way to make your stay memorable. The garden is well designed and maintained, the pool a most welcome facility with the heat and humidity. 10 gold stars!

Very relaxing
A very calm and relaxed resting place. The old mansion is well restored and has a quiet and nice ambience. The service was very good, friendly and understated. The only minor comments are the hot water wasn't very hot

the best hotel in Penang
I have just had the pleasure of staying at this fantastic hotel. It was all i expected and more. The hotel itself is beautiful, and attention to detail is perfect. The room was spacious and quiet, old world charm with all mod cons! the staff were super friendly and very helpful. Breakfast was a pleasure. I would highly recommend a stay here, and will definitely be back.

A peaceful and elegant haven in George Town
My mother and I arrived at Clove Hall at the height of the George Town Festival, and I couldn't have been happier to have booked a suite at this wonderful boutique home stay. It's mercifully quiet (a rarity when it comes to hotels in central Penang) since it's positioned away from the main roads, and it is one of the best hospitality experiences I've had in Malaysia - frankly, it was far better managed than certain five-star hotels that I've stayed at in this country! We were welcomed by Clove Hall's owners, Jo and Jim, the instant we pulled into the driveway, and by their lovely little dog, George, as well. Jim very kindly gave us his recommendations on where to find cendol (and pro tips on how to skip the massive queue at his spot of choice) while we were checking in, and Jo - who clearly runs a tight ship, which the home stay is all the better for! - showed us up to our room after we'd finished our tea and welcome drinks. We stayed in the Cinnamon Suite, which was spacious, full of light (though sunlight can be easily shut out through the louvered timber shutters), and tastefully decorated with choice pieces of antique furniture. A highlight was the beautiful four-poster bed, complete with a delicate muslin mosquito net (very Instagram-able and/or romantic, if that's your thing!), and I appreciated the fact that they'd provided an electric mosquito trap, which is much nicer (and much more effective) than a mosquito coil, which usually smells rather horrible. The bathroom was equally spacious, with a well-pressured rain shower and a selection of Thann toiletries. The shower gel - which I couldn't resist using up - had a pleasantly spicy scent to it that lingered nicely in the tropical heat. Breakfast was an absolute treat. Guests are given the option of having a cooked breakfast with eggs, well-smoked bacon, and excellent toasted seed bread with grainy artisanal kaya, which my mother went for, while I opted for their local breakfast twice in a row, which are brought in from street food vendors outside Clove Hall. Try the roti canai and char kway teow, if you're not calorie-counting - honestly, you won't regret it, even if you are. It's that tasty, and such a pleasure sitting in the beautifully restored dining room of this Edwardian Anglo-Malay bungalow, enjoying breakfast to the faint strains of well-chosen classical music coming from the kitchen while George pitter-patters around the colourful tiled floor. I can't think of any downsides to Clove Hall at all - it far exceeded my expectations, and I hope to stay there again during my future visits to Penang. Perhaps the only thing to note is that if you want to stay out late and party in George Town, you might want to choose a more commercial hotel with a 24-hour reception. Entering the bungalow after midnight can be a little tricky, as Clove Hall's reception is not manned around the clock, but if you're not a night owl and just want a restful and relaxing stay in Penang, you'll be right at home in Clove Hall.

Back "home" again....
Just returned from 2 stays within the space of a month - we just can't get enough of Penang and Clove Hall in particular - staying here is ever so apt for a Penang visit. So fitting, so elegant, so...well, Penang! As always, the helpful trio of Erlyn, Sherwin, and Michael attend to every wish in their ever-so-friendly manner. They have been at Clove Hall for a long time, and are adept at being welcoming and anticipating needs. Jim and Jo, the owners, as always, ensure that Clove Hall always puts its best foot forward. Their recommendations and tips span eating, shopping, and sightseeing and, of course, one can had a deep and meaningful on where the best char koay teow stall is, or whether roti canal is better in the morning or the evening! If you are from Malaysia or Singapore, you'll know what I mean! We ordered local breakfast (of course.....again, why would you eat eggs and bacon in Penang???) and a different one every day - Hokkien Mee, Roti Canai, Wanton Mee...could have stayed a few more days to get through the entire list.... Clove Hall, it must be said, is not a hotel but a lovely boutique B&B, with just a half dozen large (some VERY large) suites - save for breakfast, guests need to dine out - of course, this is Penang and eating out may well be the very reason you are visiting Penang in the first place. Having said that, the dynamic trio of Erlyn/Sherwin/Michael are only too happy to plate up your hawker food take-away if you do wish to take-out and then return to the serene tranquility of Clove Hall to sit under the porch and survey the birds and squirrels in the lush garden. That is my one regret - Penang is full of wonderful things to do, and I always reluctantly leave Clove Hall to go about my sight-seeing, shopping, or eating....but am happy to return to Clove Hall and always make it a point to sit under the porch for a drink, even late at night, and just relax. This is quintessential Penang. Every bit of it.
