Interesting Places Near the Hotel Ninety Six Melaka

A’Famosa - A’Famosa is definitely one of Melaka’s well-known historical attractions. A trip to Melaka is not complete without going to the ruins of the Portuguese fortress. A’Famosa used to house the entire Portuguese administration, hospitals, churches and towers but what remains now is the lone gate, named Porta de Santiago. This is one of the oldest European architectural remains in Asia that survived until today. At A’Famosa is originally constructed by Alfonso de Albuquerque, the leader who led the Portuguese invasion on the Malaka Sultanate. Apart from the remnants of the once great Portuguese architecture, the area surrounding A’Famosa is also filled with other historically significant items such as several types of cannons that were used to conquer Melaka. A’Famosa is just two kilometres away from the Hotel Ninety Six Melaka.

Christ Church - Another significant historical landmark located in Melaka. While A’Famosa was built by the Portuguese, the Christ Church was built by the Dutch when they took over Melaka from the former. The building is instantly recognizable with its brick-red colour and a huge white cross on top of it. It is built in 1753 to celebrate a century of Dutch occupation in Melaka. It is also as the place for worship as back then, they did not have any other place to do so other than a small chapel known as the St. Paul’s Church. Today, it is used as the Anglican Church with tourists attractions being limited to the common ground of the church.
