Melaka River still plays an integral part in the establishment of Melaka, only its role had changed over the years. Melaka River is no longer a crucial transportation for one to travel from a village to another. It is now holding a much bigger and important role with its new tourism iconic, Melaka River Cruise. Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the nearest airport to Melaka, which takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes drive to and from the airport. From here, take an express bus that will go straight to Melaka Sentral. The journey is estimated to be 2 hours with the fee of RM24. Finally, take a taxi to go to your destination.
Take an express bus at the TBS (Terminal Bas Bersepadu) that will take you straight to Melaka. The bus rate is around RM10 to RM15 depending on the coach. The bus ride usually takes approximately 3 hours. Melaka Sentral Bus Terminal is located at the heart of the town center. It is Malaysia’s first air-conditioned bus (state and express) and taxi terminal that has been servicing passengers in Malacca. The express bus, domestic bus and taxi are pooled together in this terminal for the convenience of passengers travelling around Melaka.
The faster route is by taking the North-South Expressway (PLUS). There are three exits to Melaka namely; Ayer Keroh toll, Simpang Empat, Alor Gajah toll and Lipat Kajang, Jasin toll. It takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes driving from Kuala Lumpur.
The highlight of Jonker Street is the night market on Fridays and Saturdays that sells everything from tasty treats to cheap souvenirs. Once known for its antique shops, this place however, has turned to clothing and crafts outlets as well as restaurants over the years.
A merry trishaw pickup point, Dutch Square Malacca is the most picturesque along Jalan Kota. A water fountain is the highlight of this the area: it is decorated with Victorian marble addition, built in 1904 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee., Dutch Square’s most prominent building is the Stadthuys, one of the oldest residual of the Dutch. Inside the Stadthuys is a beautiful white monumental staircases and high windows that looks like a typical 17th-century Dutch municipal building. The view from the back windows is very attractive and the building is well maintained up until today.
There is a ride that will take visitors to the top of the tower, at the height of more than 70 meter from the ground. This ride has the capacity to accomodate 66 passengers at one time. Built with the expertise of Swiss tecknology, the ride to the top takes only 7 minutes. This tower is open to public daily from 10 am until 11 pm. For the local visitor (MyKad holder), the fee is RM17 (adult) and RM11 (below 12 years old) while it is RM23 (adult) and RM15 (below 12 years old) for the foreign tourist.
