The Sandakan Memorial Park is located at the suburb of Taman Rimba, about 11 km from the Sandakan town. The Sandakan Memorial Park is a former site of the notorious World War II Prisoners of War (POW) Camp. This memorial is to commemorate the tragedy happening in 1945 whereby approximately 2,400 Australian and British prisoners of war held by the Japanese Occupation at the camp were forced to take part in the Death March in North Borneo. Nearly 1,400 of them lost their lives walking through a 250 km trail of the rugged Borneo jungle interior from Sandakan to Ranau in dire health conditions.
The Sandakan Memorial Park covers an area of 11 hectares beautifully landscaped and well- maintained. The park includes a small museum for visitors to dig in the history. The memory of the World War II was recorded by the rusting remains of an excavator, a generator and a boiler. The excavator was used for the construction of the airfield, which was never completed. The generator and the boiler were used for the production of electricity.
While staying in Sandakan, one shall find many activities that may suit for free time entertainment. Apart from visiting Sandakan Memorial Park, people may want to treasure the serenity and feel the blessing by honouring the Sam Sing Kung Temple. This is the third oldest temple in Sandakan, built in 1887. It has the bronze bell donated by the first Kapitan Cina of Sandakan.
