Awesome, but take care!
We were lucky when we stayed here, because the person photographing everybody had been in prison already. So we were not affected by that at all. We had also heard about the story from neighbours though, so it seems to be a certain fact, not anything that some users here just made up because they had some other issues. Our manager when we stayed at MEnU was Francis. He was a great host, very friendly and helpful with anything. We had a problem with one of his staff one time, and as soon as we had told Francis about it, it was sorted out immediately. The price for the hostel is very good, a simple breakfast included, aircon works perfectly, everything is clean and the building looks just wonderful. There are pretty plants, a chess game, and the best thing for me: a water dispenser with boiling hot and ice cold water. Loved it! We stayed in this hostel for two weeks in total and had a very very pleasant time. So what I think is the following: If you come to this place and Francis is in charge: Enjoy! If you come here and Jack is already out of prison and runs the place: Leave!

Owner films & photographs guests while showering & sleeping
The owner was caught in the act taking photos of guests while showering while I was staying at the hostel. After confiscating his phone and asking if he had more it turns out he had 2 phones with around 20,000 photos of various guests showering & sleeping on them. Some of the photographs on his phones that were confiscated included him with his exposing himself next to guests faces while they sleep, photos and videos of guys showering, and photos of stolen underwear with used condoms next to them. My friend I am travelling with and 2 others at the guesthouse were victim to this during my stay and were at the police station until 6-7am giving a statement about this, I luckily wasn't a victim to the photographing side of this as far as I'm aware but I did have a pair of underwear stolen by Jack. Jack has since got 3 months in prison and a fine but we aren't sure what will happen when he is out and whether he will be able to carry on running the business, but we are hoping not. This is 100% serious & genuine and from first hand experience, DO NOT STAY HERE.

Do not stay here: owner films people in the shower and when asleep
While staying here for Chinese NY on the weekend of 28/29 January 2017, the person I was travelling with caught the owner, Jack, filming him in the shower (evening of 28 January). The shower cubicle was locked but the walls do not reach to the ceiling and Jack was holding his phone over the top in order take videos and photos. Looking at Jack's phone, we found videos and photos of other current guests and past guests going back months. The videos and photos were from over the top of the shower cubicles, through peepholes in the shower cubicle doors and in the bedrooms while guests slept. We called the police who arrested Jack and took a statement from three of the guests. Looking now there is a review here on TripAdvisor from March 2016 saying that someone was filmed sitting on the toilet and that the staff may have been in on it. Sadly, I now know this to be true of Jack. As far as I know, no one else working there at the time of our stay was involved. Prior to this unpleasant discovery, Jack had been a a very friendly host, but this was covering up a darker side. I have never had to leave a review like this before and I hope never to have to do it again. However, it is important to me and the others who were involved that the truth is available so no future guests have to go through this. If you read this and are not convinced, feel free to message me on TripAdvisor.

BEWARE - Owner Films Guests While Showering and Sleeping
I was welcomed by Jack, the manager/owner, and felt very comfortable to stay there for the Chinese New Year. Unfortunately Jack was caught filming my friend while my he was showering. My friend looked through the phone and found hundreds of inappropriate photos of guests while they were sleeping, showering, and even photos and videos of myself in the shower. After we got both of Jack's phone we called the police, gave statements, and they took Jack into custody. Jack made us all feel very welcome so it's so disturbing that he would do something so horribly disgusting. BEWARE OF STAYING HERE.

Best Place To stay In Penang with FREE Kangen Water
We found this place by luck when walking around looking for a cheap & clean accommodation. The highlight of this place is the owner Mr Jack who is such a sweet heart. We felt like we've known him for years. He made us feel so comfortable. He goes out of his way to help everyone. He made our stay a very memorable one. Our days were filled with activities because of him. We really enjoyed our time in Penang this time. The next best thing staying here is the FREE refill of Kangen Water(alkaline water). Guests can drink and refill as much they want. We didnt have to buy water at all during the entire stay. This place comes with FREE breakfast. Bread , Cereals, Crackers, Fruits, Milk, Soy Milk. And there's a kitchen if anyone wants to cook. Traditional Peranakan Interior. Rooms & toilets were very clean. Everything was perfect. We were surprised to see bad reviews on this place & honestly think that the negative reviews are submitted by competitors. There is no way anyone in their right mind would dislike Jack or his place. We definitely know where to stay the next time we are in Penang.
