Greatest base for a Kinabatangan trip
Our tour included 4 river cruises (morning and afternoon x 2 days) and 2 night walks by paths in the jungle that surrounds the Lodge. Also, I booked there a trek to a small but steep mound nearby. Mohamed is an incredible guide, not only he could see monkeys from the opposite bank but even the small heads of baby crocodiles. Thanks to him we could see several macaque and proboscis groups, and even orangutans, several crocodiles (babies and adults), by night he shown us different kinds of birds, but the best we could see during those night walks was a small western tarsier, clung to a tree, by night. He speaks good english (though totally self taught), always smiling and making jokes, he also introduced us his family, charming people. Nul, our host there, is also nice and positive. Smiling, talkative and helpful, not only she takes over all aspects related to organizing the whole lodge, but also danced with us during the "typical tropical dancing courses" they organized after dinner, and came with our group to the second day's trekking. There was nothing I needed that they (she and the other girls that took over the reception duties) couldn't provide. Azlam is a very talented cook, I enjoyed every single meal he prepared. He was also one of the dancing teachers. The rest of the staff was always helpful, smiling, with a good knowledge of english. As someone said there, I'm going to miss them much more than some people from my own town.

jungle avonture
the morning and afternoon bootrides are really great. Mohamad is a great guide. He is a polite and positive local, has amazing eyes and his English is really good. We booked with Borneo Dream. First day was turtle island. Good trip but guide Ejab was not polite and his English was bad. The Gomantong cave is a cockroaches heaven. I would skip that next time.

Close to nature in the middle of the rainforest
We joined River Junkie for a 3D2N stay at this lodge. It is very relaxing and the activities they prepared for their visitors are well arranged. The river cruises are interesting and we got 4 trips during our stay. 2 in the early morning 6AM and 2 in the evenings. Of course when there are sightings of the wild animals and birds, it makes it all the more worth it. Plenty of macaques, but we also saw proboscis monkeys, orang utan from a long way away and crocodiles. Our guide Jonathan is very knowledgable about the wildlife and is able to give a good narrative. He's got eyes like the eagles as he could spot the wildlife way before any of us could. Now that is surely a gift. The food served is delicious and adequate for a nature lodge's stay.

Three day stay
Stayed here with six family members. We opted to pay a little extra and have an air conditioned lodge, which is money very well spent. The site lies along the Kinabatangan river bank, on the opposite side to the village, so once our bus arrived, one of the motor launches came to collect our party and baggage. This is, in my opinion, primarily a back packers accommodation., With some large dormitories, and a communal shower and toilet block. The admin block is where check in happens, and a briefing is given by a member of staff. It is good to listen to this, as it covers all aspects of how the tours work, and what times meals are served. There is a small shop that sells essential commodities such as beer and wine. Concrete and wooded. Paths connect the chalets to the Jetty where the river safaris are embarked. We were very fortunate as our guide, Jonathan, was extremely knowledgeable, and also benefitted from having the eyes of a hawk. Our first safari saw us observing Long Tailed Macaques, Pig Tailed Macaques, Kingfishers, Egrets, Proboscis Monkeys, and lastly, and much to my amazement, a herd of Malaysian Elephants, that were foraging noisily at the river Bank edge. To see this was a truly moving experience. All of our subsequent safaris were guided by Jonathan, and we went on to see many more species under his expert eyes. Food was basic, but good and adequate. Rooms were clean, and I enjoyed sharing the porch with a family of Gekkos. This is well run, with no frills, what you do get is interesting encounters with nature, sharing a boat with other individuals with similar interests. Definitely worth its five stars. Good value for money, in pretentious. Don’t come here if you want to have room service, maids and butlers. This is very much a get out there and enjoy it place. Thank you to all of the kind, helpful and friendly staff who made our stay so pleasant. And to Jonathan, special thanks. your Rock my friend.

Backpackers lodge
Looking a bit tired this place is mainly for backpackers, does the same trips as everyone else though our guide spent a lot of time on his mobile phone, the whole area is ringed by palm plantations and only a 100m strip either side of the river remains. We left sad that this once beautiful place has lost the ecology vs economy argument, not a great concentration of animals we were promised. Note you can book this direct and save the agents fees. You’ll meet interesting travellers here and they are good company.
