VietJet has been granted an approval for flying in November 2007 by Vietnamese Minister of Finance. However, it was not until 2011 that this airline finally operated and carried passengers. VietJet planned to commence flight in 2008 but it kept getting delayed to take off because of the global economic crisis and branding conflicts with Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam.

In February 2010, fellow Low-Cost Carrier AirAsia announced its joint-venture plan with VietJet by purchasing a 30% stake in the VietJet Aviation, but then called off due to the airline launch setbacks.

On 25 December 2011, VietJet finally made its first flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. Soon enough, VietJet has attracted high number of domestic and worldwide travelers to fly with it. In 2014, VietJet was able to carry a total of 10 million passengers. The number then increased to 25 million passengers in 2015.
