Saung Angklung Udjo

Located in the eastern part of the bustling city of Bandung, Saung Angklung Udjo arrives with a mission to preserve one of Sundanese culture that almost lost to times: Angklung. The echoes of this musical instrument are expected to be heard throughout the country, throughout the world, forming unity and togetherness, and maintaining the relationship between humans and the environment. Founded in 1966 by the couple Udjo Ngalagena and Uum Sumiyati, Saung Angklung Udjo was presented to introduce this traditional music instrument to the world. Until finally, UNESCO named angklung as one of the cultural heritages in November 2010. This cultural tourism is still highly visited by tourist to this day, especially foreign tourists who want to hear the beauty of angklung. Here are some of the things that the visitors can do during their visit to the Saung Angklung Udjo.

Learning About the History of Angklung

Angklung is a traditional music instrument made of bamboo pieces and made into pipes, then tied together into one frame. To make sound, the player will shake the angklung continuously. There are several types of angklung, namely the Angklung Gubrag, Angklung Buncis, Angklung Bungko, and Angklung Baduy. In the past, this instrument was often played as an encouragement during the war in the Sunda Kingdom. Furthermore, until the colonial period, angklung was still played to encourage the fighters in fighting the invaders. Not many people know about this, and certainly not many of them know that there is value of discipline, passion for cooperation, responsibility, agility and accuracy in this Sundanese musical instrument. In Saung Angklung Udjo, you will have the opportunity to know the history of angklung as traditional music instrument of Sundanese. You will learn how this music instrument was formed, made, and what was the purpose in the past. Today, angklung comes in more modern concept. However, the saung owners still maintain the traditional angklung for generations.

Learning to Play Angklung

Not only learning about the history of angklung, but you can also learn how to play this traditional music instrument. You will be accompanied by a professional angklung player that will teach you how to play it. You will understand that playing angklung will make you lower your ego because this musical instrument has only one note, which means to make harmonious music, angklung should be played together. Meanwhile, the essence of angklung in this saung bamboo is “alunan rumpun bambu” means the music of a group of bamboos. It means that the angklung will be played more dynamic, energetic, and fun. You also have to understand the mission to get the feeling when playing this musical instrument, which is to preserve the Sundanese culture.

Watching the Bamboo Show

You shouldn’t miss the opportunity to watch the Bamboo Show. After all, this is the star of all the activities in this tourist destination. This show consists of several shows with a relatively short duration. Therefore, you will learn a lot about Sunda culture in one and half an hour. The Bamboo Shows are held daily from 15.30 to 17.00. The shows include golek puppet shows, traditional dances, angklung music performance from beginners, orchestra, mass angklung, and arumba angklung. Before the show ends, the child dancer will invite you to dance together. This Bamboo Show is also known as the Kaulinan Urang Lembur. The owners of the Saung were inspired by their teacher, Daeng Soetigna, who succeeded in creating Angklung Padaeng in 1938. In the past, angklung had only pentatonic note before developed into various note they have today.

Saung Angklung Udjo offers cultural-based educational tours that you shouldn’t be missed. However, to be able to learn and watch the show, you need to buy a relatively affordable ticket. For the local tourist, the entrance ticket is Rp67.900 on weekdays and Rp72.750 on weekends. Meanwhile, the entrance ticket for foreign tourist is Rp106.700 on weekdays and Rp116.400 on weekends. You need to know that the Saung Angklung Udjo entrance tickets are limited. Therefore, you should purchase them well in advance.
