Opened in 2002, Muhammad Cheng Hoo Mosque is one of several mosques in Indonesia that are named after the celebrated 15th-century explorer, Cheng Ho or Zheng He. The Chinese Muslim admiral is believed to have spread Islamic teachings to several regions in Southeast Asia, including Java and Palembang. Inspired by Niujie Mosque in Beijing, this mosque combines elements of Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Javanese architecture and philosophy.
