For many Filipinos, summer is the perfect time to travel—the weather is perfect for outdoor explorations and the long weekends give travelers more opportunities to go on a getaway. But of course, any trip requires a certain amount of preparation, and while spontaneous trips can be memorable, too, carefully planned travels can not only ensure a comfortable and hassle-free vacation, but it can help you save money as well.

So before you finalize and go on your summer getaway, here are a few things to plan for and consider:

1. The location of your hotel/resort can make or break your trip.

Summer is a time for relaxing, and your hotel should be able to provide that. If it is within your budget, go for accommodations that are beachfront and have plenty of facilities.

At the very least, it should be easily accessible, so it won’t be a hassle for you to explore nearby attractions. When booking tours, look for those that offer free hotel pick-up and drop-off services.

2. Protect yourself and your possessions from the elements.

Apart from the usual summer essentials like shades, sunblock (make sure it has SPF50 and is nature-friendly), and a hat, pack some after-sun gel to soothe your skin after a day in the summer heat, as well as a drybag to make sure your belongings don’t get wet.

After a day at the beach, make sure to wash any items that got drenched, as the salt from the dried-up seawater can cause damage to delicate items.

3. Be prepared for whatever adventure you might get yourself into.

You don’t have to be limited to beach getaways for this season. Explore off-the-beaten-path destinations and enjoy new experiences. Just remember to pack a power bank and wear durable footwear and comfortable clothing. Make sure you have enough cash on hand as you might have a hard time finding an ATM or establishments that accept credit card transactions.

4. Pack enough fuel for your body.

When we go on a summer vacation, we usually spend most of our days out and about. We become so engrossed with our tours and activities that we sometimes forget to eat or drink water.

Don’t let hunger and dehydration keep you from enjoying your trip—always pack a filled reusable water bottle with you, especially on days that you’ll be mostly out in the sun. Remember to pack some snacks to munch on in between meals.

5. Embrace the fact that you’ll be sharing your vacation with other people.

Summer is peak travel season, so even if you’re going on a solo trip, there’s a big chance that you’ll run into people wherever you go. Use this opportunity to make new friends and learn about other people. Who knows, you might even gain a new travel buddy!
