Eastern Samar's Calicoan Beach is the New Go-to Surfing Destination

How to Get There Lone Surfer In 2013, the sleepy destination of Guiuan, Eastern Samar made its mark on the map having survived the the devastation of Super Typhoon Yolanda, internationally known as Haiyan. Nowadays, it has rebuilt itself and with Calicoan Beach, has become a go-to for beginner and advance surfers alike. Though not as commercialized as other surfing spots, the waves more than make up for it.

• Via Public Transport

There are public vans from Tacloban to Guiuan. Vans of Duptours leave every hour starting 5:20AM, even if the van is not yet full. On the other hand, vehicles of Van-van's leave every 30 minutes starting 5:30AM. From the town proper, ride a multi cab going to Calicoan Beach.

• Via Private Car

The town of Guiuan lacks in public transportation, so getting around could be quite challenging. If you rent a private car, the driver will take you directly to Calicoan Beach, saving you time and effort. You may coordinate with a local tourism officer to ask for a private car with a driver to tour you around. You may contact the tourism office at dotreg8@yahoo.com.

The Calicoan Beach

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by a long stretch of unspoiled, white-sand beach. There's a lack of commercial establishments around; in fact, there are only two restaurants near the surfing spot. The network signals are surprisingly strong, so updating your loved ones from afar won't be a problem.Calicoan Villa is the only lodge in the area where you can book a room. It is a five-minute walk away from the beach.

Visayas' Best Surfing Spot

Since there are only a few people familiar with the place, you can expect the beach to be sparse with people. You can bring your own surfboard or rent one from ABCD Beach Surf Camp (an on-site camp which offers surfboard rentals and surfing lessons). The surf camp has more than 10 trainers teaching tourists basic surfing techniques. For an hour of surfing lessons, you will be charged PHP 300.

Guiuan is in the direct path of the Pacific Ocean, creating waves the entire year. However, according to the trainers of the ABCD Camp, it's best to surf at Calicoan Beach between April and November. Summer is great for beginners as the waves are not that high. Seasoned surfers, however, will surely enjoy the giant waves that occur from August to October. Calicoan Beach is a 10-minute drive away from Linao Cave. If you're in the mood to go trekking, you can go there as well. Head to Calicoan Beach and ride the exciting waves!
