Changi Airport Skytrain Evolution

The Changi Airport Skytrain has seen several transformations since its inception, each aimed at enhancing passenger convenience and airport connectivity.

1990: The Skytrain makes its debut, connecting Terminals 1 and 2.
March 2006: Upgraded to the Mitsubishi Crystal Mover system, improving efficiency and reliability.
November 2007: Extensions to Terminal 3 and the South section open, introducing 5 new stations.
February 24, 2015: Service between Stations B to E (T2 to T3) was suspended for the construction of Jewel Changi Airport.
2019: Signalling and capacity upgrade, including the addition of 6 new train cars.
April 12, 2019: Resumption of service between Stations B to E (T2 to T3) with 3-car service, initially for transit passengers.
July 2019: Full resumption of service between Stations B to E (T2 to T3) with 3-car service, now available for both public and transit passengers.

The Changi Airport Skytrain was constructed and inaugurated back in 1990, coinciding with the development and opening of Changi Airport Terminal 2. This automated people mover (APM) system initially linked the two terminals via two parallel tracks, one dedicated to airside passengers and the other serving the general public.

Initially, the system operated using Adtranz C-100 trains running on a central guideway. From 2002 to 2006, a significant expansion project costing S$135 million extended the system to connect both terminals with the newly built Terminal 3. Additionally, a new system exclusively for airside passengers was introduced on the South side. During this upgrade, the guideway was converted to accommodate the Mitsubishi Crystal Mover operations, allowing the old system to continue functioning while the new one was installed. Finally, by March 2006, the upgraded system between T1 and T2 was fully operational, followed by the opening of new lines to T3 in November 2007.
