Entry requirements to Cairo

Egypt has allowed the resumption of international flights to enter the country. Here are some of the requirements you need to fulfill in order to enter Cairo:

Travelers need to provide proof of vaccination.
Travelers need to submit a health declaration form online before arrival.
Travelers may have to purchase travel or have health insurance before planning a trip to Cairo.
Travelers must wear a mask in public places.

For fully vaccinated travelers, there are no testing requirements and quarantine mandates for anyone planning to enter Cairo from the Philippines.

Take note that Filipino travelers need to apply for a visa at the Egyptian embassy before they can fly to Egypt.

How to get to Cairo?

Travelers from the Philippines will take around 15 hours and 58 minutes if they are flying from Manila to Cairo. If travelers fly from Mactan – Cebu to Cairo, it will take longer, which is 18 hours and 41 minutes.

Flights from Manila to other parts of Egypt, such as Alexandria, will take around 19 hours to 21 hours long. Cairo is six hours behind the Philippines, thus it is best to time your travel properly.

Major airlines flying from Ninoy Aquino International Airport to Cairo International Airport specifically are Gulf Air Bahrain, Thai Airways International, including Philippines Airlines.

Depending on the dates, a direct flight may cost around PHP 19,000 to PHP 27,000.

Peak season will definitely make flight prices more expensive especially those closer to major events in Cairo, such as the month of Ramadhan or Eid.

When is the best time to fly to Cairo?

The best time to visit the city would be from November to March where during the days it is pleasantly warm, but at night it is quite cool.

At night the temperature can fall below 10°C after the sunsets. It can also reach as low as 5°C.

In April, the temperature can go up to 30°C, and it can even go up to 35°C by the time it reaches June. At night the temperature is around 20°C.

Pyramids of Giza

The pyramid has been declared as one of the world's marvels and should not be missed by anyone who travels to Egypt.

The four pyramids are located slightly on the outskirt of the city, at the Gaza Plateau and has been attracting millions of travelers and is also the country's top highlight.

The pyramid plateau is located 13 kilometres southwest of the central city.

There are several ways to get to the plateau:

Visitors may take a taxi there.
Take a metro to Giza then take a local minibus that will drop visitors at the entrance of the pyramid plateau.

Among the four pyramids, the Pyramid of Cheops or its other name, the Great Pyramid or Pyramid of Khufu, is the largest among the four Giza groups.

Things to know:

Visitors can explore the interior of narrow passages to see the wonders of the pyramid.
Visitors can also enter this pyramid and also the Pyramid of Mycerinus or Pyramid of Menkaure, which is smaller.
There is an internal tunnel area in the pyramids where visitors can look closer closely.

Another great landmark there would be the lion-shaped Sphinx with the face of the pharaoh. It is one of the world's ancient monuments that is very iconic, and it guards the mortuary temples.

Grand Egyptian Museum

Egypt’s Grand Egyptian Museum have one of the largest collection of antiquities displayed in the museum.

Visitors are encouraged to see the Tutankhamun Galleries if they have limited time at the museum.

In this gallery, some treasures were found in the tomb of Tutankhamun; the son-in-law and also the successor of Amenophis IV.

Khan el-Khalili

Khan el-Khalili bazaar in Cairo offers one of the best shopping experiences there is.

The bazaar received its name from several historic caravanserais. Caravanserai used to be a street that was filled with inns where merchants and travelers would rest and recover from their trip.

The souq is like a maze of small alleyways turned into a shopping district in AD 1400. It is now the home for many Egyptian artisans and local merchants that produces traditional crafts and souvenirs.

Muizz Street is one of the places in Khan el-Khalili where examples of medieval Islamic architecture can be seen.

Khan el-Khalili is also located close to Al-Hussein Mosque, Wekalet El Ghouri and Al-Azhar market, making the whole place seem like medieval Cairo.

Many things are sold here in Khan el-Khalili such as:

sparkling silverware,
gold artefacts and antiques,
stained-glass lamps,
household furnitures,
incense,
and handmade accessories.

There are also dedicated streets for gold, copper and spices.

Museum of Islamic Art

The Museum of Islamic Art have one of the most important collections of Middle Eastern artistry in the world and showcase the richness of Islamic heritage.

There are up to 4,500 artefacts that can be found there and up to 100,000 objects.

The museum is located at the edge of the Islamic Cairo district. From Bab Zuweila, visitors are able to get to the museum on foot.

The displays can be traced back to the Ottoman Empire, where there are arts such as:

tile work,
Ayyubid ceramics,
frescoes,
delicately patterned wood-inlay,
coinage,
carved marble tombstones,
and jewel-toned carpets.

There are also Qurans displayed in illuminated glass cases and ceramics, glassware and metalware that has been decorated.

Moreover, the museum has a jewellery collection and Astronomy room where equipment and astrolabes are displayed there.
