What You Need to Know About the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)

What is Coronavirus disease? It is a type of virus that infects the nose, sinuses, and upper throat.

In December 2019, it caused an outbreak of respiratory illness in Wuhan, a city in Central China.

Reports said that most patients involved in the outbreak were initially linked to a seafood market, suggesting that the virus was due to an animal-to-person spread. However, it began spreading from person to person.

Symptoms and Complications of Coronavirus

Coronavirus patients have reportedly experienced mild to severe illness with symptoms of:

Fever
Cough and Colds
Shortness of Breath
Difficulty in Breathing
High Body Temperature

Other less common symptoms include:

Headache
Sore Throat
Diarrhea
aches and pains
Nausea or vomiting

According to reports and medical studies, these symptoms may appear in as few as two days or as long as two weeks after exposure.

If you have traveled to any country with a confirmed case in the last 14 days and developed any of the aforementioned symptoms, call a doctor right away.

This should also be the case if you had been in close contact with someone showing these symptoms.

How to Protect Yourself and Others

Getting vaccinated is the most effective way to avoid getting sick. There are already several Covid-19 vaccines available to slow the spread of the virus. Moreover, ensure that you stay up to date on your vaccine and get booster shots.

While there are already vaccines available, it is also best to avoid exposure to the virus. Experts recommend the following steps to keep the virus from spreading:

Wear a mask.
Frequently wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol will do.
Do not touch your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Avoid contact with people who are ill. If you're the one who is sick, it's recommended to stay at home.
When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth or nose with a tissue. Properly dispose of the tissue afterward.
Disinfect the objects and surfaces you regularly touch.
Get enough rest to boost your immune system.
Drink plenty of water.
Thoroughly cook eggs and meat.

If you are travelling, take extra precaution and follow the travel requirements imposed by the country you are visiting.

Make these steps a habit to lessen the chance of getting the virus. As they say, prevention is better than cure.

Remember to keep yourself safe. Be in-the-know about the virus through credible sources.
